Don't be so quick to laugh...it will harm your watch; they call it the submariner because it's meant to be UNDER water, not above in the sunlight

I agree MikeV.

It actually may harm your watch IF it is not exposed to sunlight after it has been running for more than 72 hours if exposed to water.

There is Truth to this!

It might take a number of years but according to a friend of mine that is a watchmaker a black, blue, ....... non metal dial....as well as the painted on ROLEX and other markings on the dial will do much beter with 20 years protected than 20 years of sun beating down on it....so for those of you who in 2040 want todays Rolex to be a true vintage....... Less sun on the dial is better!!!

Fading of the dial and luminous markers are caused by over-exposure to the sun. Sun rays are known ro have bleaching properties. But, there are some vintage collectors who prefers to have a dial with some patina.

The sun can do some serious damage but nothing like air. Don't get me started on what water will do and if anyone brings up salt water I might

I hesitated to open, but after reading smiled.

So?

I guess it would depend on how close to the sun you were? :)

Sun Exposure will change the color/hue on the bezel/dial. So far no too many things don't change color if exposed to sun for a long time.

Not at all. That's my black Sub with the sun rays playing some kinda trick on the dial to make it appear blue!!

From a recent Rolex advertisement, "The bezel of a watch can deteriorate when exposed to sunlight, chlorinated water or scratches." This is in an advertisement touting the advantages of the ceramic bezel. We all know the ceramic bezel is manufactured using the cathodic magnetron sputtering process.
