Is the Omega Moon watch over rated?

I am a fan of the moon watch so I decided to go to my local AD to try it on.

Whilst there all the sales people were dealing with customers so I got chatting with this gentleman who was also waiting.

He asked me which watch I was looking to purchase. I said the moon watch. He then replied, the moon watch is so overrated.

what do you guys think.

Is the Omega Moon watch overrated?

Your salesman is a moron. Underrated if anything.

Edit: That guy is a moron, not your salesman whom has nothing to do with this naive statement.

It was a fellow shopper Tom, and yes, he is a moron. Probably the most iconic chrono of all time. I know the Daytona will likely win out in these parts but the Speedy is a great watch. Especially the manual winds.

Has to be a top 5 most iconic watch of all time, so I don't believe it's overrated. On a value basis, hard to argue against it being #1

An honest salesman – how refreshing, and a very rare breed indeed.

Yes. Wholly overrated. That doesn't make it a bad watch. Far from it. But it can never live up to the legend that's been created around it.

Maybe he would rather sell something more expensive. It is a great looking iconic watch. And it is comparatively fairly priced.

I have it and I agree that it's a massively overrated watch.

Would love to know the reasons why you think it's overrated. And if so why keep it?

Nearly bought one a number of times.

Tried them on, but never jumped out for me, just could not pull the trigger.

Great history, but just does nothing on the wrist for me.
Only my personnel opinion mind.

The 9300 rattled and felt so cheap on my wrist I flipped it in les than a week. I could t rid myself fast enough of it. Astonishing to look at in pictures. I found the white hands looked cheap in person. It felt clumsy too. Too tall and ungainly on the wrist. Perhaps the other references are better.

I'd take it over a Sub any day... Its a perfect everyday watch and I love that it has no date. Just wind, set and go.

When people talk about and praise the Speedy Pro it's for the original handwound version with the heselite crystal. THAT'S the real deal!

Over-rated according to what and who's standards? That is the question. For the price, and the history, it's a very competent offering for an iconic watch ( this applies to the original Speedmaster ). Shame that Omega has milked the Speedmaster for all it's worth. Now you have 1,000,0001 variation of the same watch.

Is the Omega Moon watch over rated?

Absolutely, because by this definition every luxury good is overrated. But really, who cares!

Cheap bracelet, just on-par case and movement finishing, no column wheel, stiff start and stop chrono functions are the first things that come to mind.

Why keep? It was one of my father's watch.

I think the Speedmaster is a great watch for what it is. It can also be had for a significant discount.

Bracelets from older watches are rarely as well made as modern ones. They also stretch and sag. Look at older Rolex bracelets will make you cringe also.

The case can be refinished to bring it back up to standard. Modern ones have crisp delineation between polished and brushed surfaces.

Lack of column wheel - agree - but show me a new handwound chronograph under $10k with a column wheel.

Also show me a watch at the price point of the Speedy with real history, and by real history I mean it did something of real functional value, as opposed to becoming famous as a prop worn by a movie star.

I don't know if it's overrated, but (like the Sub), it is kind of boring. Feels like every seasoned flipper has had one or two before, but they never really last in a collection.

If people don't know why they bought them. You see this in every product category - "It's what I'm supposed to do". Sad to see people behave like sheep but there you have it if you don't appreciate the history and significance of the watch. It would be like going to Mount Rushmore "just" to see a few heads carved in the rocks.

A few watches have been on the moon and a lot of watches have not. How can the Omega Speedy Pro be overrated?

Le Chef hit the nail on the head. It's a watch that served a purpose in one of the most defining moments of human history. There aren't a lot of watches that share such a history and certainly not at that price point.
