Vintage or new datejust

Thinking of buying a 36mm steel datejust.

Would you go for a vintage or new watch and silver or white dial?

Please help me decide.

Very personal thing and quite difficult to advise!
For me, having had a Rolex from new already I will be buying vintage next, and I do this for very specific reasons - my new sub was to mark my marriage, my vintage will be to mark the life of my father.

Questions for you - have you handled both new and vintage Datejust? do you prefer the vintage look and feel? Do you have vintage pieces already?

Nice decision to have though!

Your first should be new with your name on the card.? Yes I would say so.

But which one sings to you when you wear it?
Which is more practical?

I love my dad's vintage expII but for general practicality I choose my new ExpII. Better bracelef, incredible lume and improved legibility.

And once again which one sings to you when you wear it?

I would buy new first. Then a vintage, preferably from your birth year for a vintage. So having both would be the ideal situation. But if it were to be your one and only, then new for sure...

I would buy slightly pre-owned from one of our Trusted Sellers. Get one that is complete with the box and papers and under warranty. Save a lot of funds. Nothing wrong with vintage but issues can arise. Save yourself some headaches and for the first, get a modern watch.

Unless there is something about the new that you prefer, buy used. These are very inexpensive preowned

I just like vintage in most things where it is an option. That's just me. So, I vote for vintage.

Personal choice but the most important thing for me is the concealed clasp that came in with the 6 digit DJ in around 2003 I think...........looks so much better IMHO and wears very comfortably.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

If possible try both on. Me personally.....I love the DJ 36 with silver stick dial.....pure class and very understated. As stated above the newer models have the updated clasp.
Good luck and post pics when you get it.

As stated earlier, vintage models are relatively inexpensive. Also, a ton to choose from, if you could pick up all original, maybe even box and papers would be a bonus.

A new watch will have no service costs up front. Count on having to service a vintage watch sooner than later....$500-700 to keep an old watch running.... Personal experience.

If you have more money than you know what to do with or the hidden clasp is essential in a watch for you, then buy new. But 36 mm Datejusts have about the biggest deprecation of any Rolex, especially so for the two tone watches (stainless steel depreciates a lot too, but holds slightly better than the TT). For example, I got a 1990 16233 in perfect condition which in the UK retails for around £9500 with diamond dial; I got mine for £3800. It doesn't have the hidden clasp, but does have the same movement and looks great (I actually prefer the styling of the early 90s DJs).

As for silver vs white dial? Well if you have patience, you could get both for around the same price as a buying from an AD!! Silver or black dial 16234s look great though.

New with blue stick dial for me. The sunburst dial can sing and play in light.

New and white imo. Your first rolex should be a new one, then it'll be your first and vintage in the future

Vintage or new datejust

Probably comes down to price.

If it is your first Rolex i'd say go new. You get that 'special' experience of buying from an AD plus you are covered by Rolex warranty for ultimate peace of mind.

You can always buy second hand for your 2nd and 3rd

I chose silver because I believe it to be timeless but there really isn't a wrong choice. Best of luck

Do vintage and modern DJ36 both have the same lug length?
Also, did they fatten up the lugs on the modern version like they did with the SubC?

In my opinion if you like to wear a less bulky and sleeker watch go for vintage..!

Vintage with a cool dial like linen or wideboy etc. That was the golden age of datejust.

Vintage is a good way to go but for me the minimum now for a DJ would be a freshly serviced quickset.

I'd go new unless I found a gently used and current model full set for -1000. less. Color is a personal choice, my choice, silver.

Depends on your personal tastes. Might want to consider a compromise. Modern lightly used. Save a ton of $ and can find a full set with warranty.

The new six digit DJ models will wear slightly larger than the vintage 4 or 5 digit references. Different bracelet clasps too. Try on both and then decide.
