What causes this on this 1680 Red
I requested some better pics on this Red sub a few weeks ago as the pics in the ad didn't show much & i got these today & i'm passing on this one .However i'm curious what caused the damage to the case to the left & right of the the model # the other side is the same & serial# is barely visible & the divots back of all 4 lugs also some pitting on the front of the upper left lug.Would all that polish out ? shame as it's a full set.

That's what I figured but it must be non-Rolex I'm guessing to do that much damage

Looks fairly normal to me and something I would look for, and expert to see in a watch of this age. Looks like a nice piece by the way!

That doesn't look exactly "normal" to me. I certainly could be wrong, but that looks less like bracelet wear, and more like some sort of corrosion caused by god only knows what. I'd be a little concerned

The crud between the lugs looks like "normal" crud but it's not the best image to make a judgement, a sharper image would help. The wear on the lugs looks like normal wear in my opinion, but based on the image I wouldn't be prepared to stand up in court and give testemony under oath

To me it looks less like crud (that is something that could be removed), and more like the steel itself has been affected and mangled somehow |

If it is just 'gunk' (edit -or crud) on the case I wouldn't worry about it. If it is corrosion it likely means the watch was actually used as a diving watch, probably in salt water, and not well rinsed in fresh water after each dive.
As others have said, hard to tell from the pictures, but that watch is worth looking at in hand in order to be certain - if it can be returned. My gilt 5513 looked something like that, and it wasn't until I had it in hand that I realized it was 'gunk' (edit - crud), not corrosion- Last edited by seattleal; 30 March 2017 at 05:31 AM.. Yes, I believe 'gunk' is the north American analog of the European word 'crud'.
Watches east of the Prime Meridian develop crud, whereas those west of the Prime Meridian develop gunk. But in the interest of uniformity, I've edited my post above! Hope that helps |

It looks like slag from welding. But, it could be "crud" as we call it south of the Mason Dixon.

I don't know... on a few of my vintage it seems that the metal can degrade and the surface becomes mottled. I am unconvinced it's clearly environmental or maybe some impurity in the steel or both
