Don Rickles Dies at 90

Don Rickles, Legendary Comic With a Gift for the Insult, Dies at 90
"Mr. Warmth" forged a career when he turned the table in his hecklers, going on to insult everyone he encountered — even Frank Sinatra.

Legendary comic Don Rickles, a rapid-fire insulting machine who for six decades earned quite a living making fun of people of all creeds and colors and everyone from poor slobs to Frank Sinatra, has died. He was 90.

Rickles died Thursday at his home in Los Angeles of kidney failure, publicist Paul Shefrin announced.

I love Don Rickles. He was a very nice guy when not doing his act. Many favorite moments, but will never forget Johnny Carson's irritation with him for breaking his cigarette box when Rickles had acted as guest host:

RIP, Don.

The funniest *true* Don R story ...

He's on his first date with his future wife. They go out to see Sinatra. Don gets the manager to ask Sinatra to stop over at Don's table as Don is such a great fan. Sinatra eventually comes over. Don turns to him and snaps, "Not now, Frank! Can't you see I'm busy?".

One of the all time greats.
A bit of Rickles trivia. He was the only guest Johnny Carson allowed on without having some sort of questions/scripted dialogue established prior to appearing on the Tonight show.

He was a better actor than comedian, and he was a damn funny comedian.

Prior to becoming a cop, I was lucky enough to work in the legendary South Shore Room at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Mr. Rickles was a frequent performer there. He never started his shows from the stage; he used to walk through the audience with the orchestra playing some type of Spanish Matador music.

One night while his opening act was still on stage, Mr. Rickles walked through the kitchen as usual to get to the front of the room. I was finishing up some paperwork and Mr. Rickles just stood next to me and stared at me. I asked him if he’d like a scotch and I got him one. He asked me my name and after I told him and he gently slapped me across the face, telling me not to lie to him. I laughed and pointed to my name pin to prove it.

He stared at my face closely and said, “You got a few of us in WWII didn’t you?” (I’m almost 6 foot with blonde hair and blue eyes, part of my Germanic heritage and Mr. Rickles is Jewish). I told him it wasn’t me personally but perhaps some of my relatives may have had something to do with it.

I wished him good show and he wished me a good night. Making a long story, dull; for the following two weeks of his engagement, whenever he saw me, he called me by my correct name without benefit of seeing my name pin. He was truly a genuine gentleman and ended every show with the statement, “I live for the day when every bigot will rot in hell.”

The world will miss him.

From some of the earliest performances on Dick Van Dyke, Kelly Hereoes, Johnny Carson, and his failed attempts at his own TV series. Kelly Heroes and that Frank Sinatra bit on Johnny Carson always stick out as two of my favorites.
