Rolex owner not into watches
Hi guys,
A lot of my friends are watches enthusiasts e.g. like Rolexes, AP, etc. We have a friend who bought a BLNR around a year ago but we never see him wearing it. Recently I asked him why he didn't wear it and he said he wasn't really into watches. I then asked him why he bought it and he said he asked someone what a good watch was and they said a 'Rolex Blue Black' so he bought it. Does anyone know people who have high end watches but don't wear them? I think my friend should sell his to me at mates rates lol. |

I'm not really into watches. But really appreciate the craftsmanship of mechanical watches. I bought a Rolex in recent year after I decided to move up the ladder from the Omega that I had bought 10 years ago.

Not everyone who buys a Rolex is into watches. The idea of buying one for status, to show off or to simply say you wear Rolex is not that hard to comprehend with "A-type" personalities.

There are plenty of people like this. I'd bet there are more Rolex owners who aren't into watches and just wear one because its a status symbol.
Ask them anything about it and they have no idea. |

I stayed away from Rolex for so long because of the status thing, to my mind you pay for the brand more than the actual watch. However once I saw one in person that changed completely.

One of my friends isn't really into watches, and only has one because his dad bought it for him. He openly admits that he wears it because girls out here (uptown Dallas) like shiny, expensive things. He didn't even bother to change the time when we switched to daylight savings time a few weeks ago

Yes, I have a friend who has a significant collection from PP, VC, Rolex, Omega etc. Many of them great historical references and very cool. He likes watches and can talk all day to you about style and movements but when it comes to wearing a watch he wears a Rolex TT Submariner, 116613LN, or a Swatch Area 51. I always ask why he does not wear anything else and he says those are the two he enjoys. Everyone is different I guess.

That is a lot of Rolex business and why Rolex spends so much time and money for name regagnition to the general public. Rolex certainly is the "generic" choice for those that want to buy a good watch and wants to put little to no time into research. Most everyone I know that owns a Rolex couldn't tell you any model names or even how the watch works.

As stated above I would guess the majority of Rolex owners aren't "into watches" as defined by people here.
Lots of people also but porsches but aren't into racing or the track.

I bought my Rolex because it's a beautiful watch. I don't know a thing about Swiss movement. Just because someone has a beautiful girlfriend, it doesn't mean hey have to know a damn thing about anatomy.

Tell him this watch is so yesterday and the new large red Sub is now the thing, then as a good mate offer to take it off his hands.
I wish I knew people like this, at least then they would pretend to be listening when I talk about watches... |

Yeah, i'd say that "into watches" represents a very small segment of most watch sales. However, buying and not even wearing is something else.

I think it's great that people still buy good watches to simply, you know, tell the time. I'd proabably live a happier life if I didn't have to over-research everything I purchase.

My business partner has an Oyster Perpetual he received as a wedding gift but rarely wears it. I'm going to work on him about it.
Oh man ... so much truth in this for me as well. #zing |

I like quality things if I can afford it. I am not particulary into the watch but I would buy Rolex because I know they make quality ones. Life is short, I agree. I like to buy quality and enjoy them.

I graduated from a $30 Timex in 1988 to a stainless DJ with a fluted bezel Jubilee and a blue stick dial. The only thing I knew about the brand was rich people wore Rolexes. I had attained some businesses success at the time and a $1400 watch was an extravagant purchase but god I loved wearing that piece.

I think buying a Rolex can be like buying a prestige car. You want a good car? You get an Audi or a BMW or a Mercedes. A Ford would do, but they are the 'standard' cars in the class. For some, a Rolex is the same.

Audi, BMW and Merc all make economy boxes these days and quality control is sub par unless going for big ticket items. Porsche, like Rolex, dont make anything budget at all and the brand holds greater value because of it |

Maybe not econo boxes, but they do make a four cylinder Macan under $50K, which is what SUVs from many companies can easily reach. I guess that would be akin to choosing between a higher end Tag or an OP.

Audi A1 - £14,990.00 Mercedes A Class - £20,670 BMW 1 Series - £21,950 ... Porsche Macan - £45,915 So more than twice the price at least. |
