Is Rolex Going To Far?
I Love my Rolex Watches!
BUT....As i see some of the changes Rolex has made to its watches i am not sure i really like the NEW Rolex Ideas. 1. I love the ROLEX Name and Crown on my watch Face. BUT ONLY ONCE PLEASE! I am glad that my watches Don't Have ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX all along the inside Ring. To Busy IMO and will it really stop those Folex People? 2. The Laser Crown on the Crystal is fine BUT if it has to be replaced a "S" will advertize that it is not an Original Crystal.....in the past if you replaces a crystal Who new? If I were buying a pre owned Rolex it would send up a Red Flag as to why the crystal was replaced. Just my and I Do still ROLEX but stop already with the cosmetic Changes!!!!

I must agree to some extent here. Especially when it comes to the possible changes to the Sub in the near future with ceramic and polished center links etc....NOT FOR ME and I think they are messing with a GOOD THING

Ok, but the things you cite do not particularly bother me. The "ROLEX ROLEX" rehault is barely visible on my Sub Date. The new Rolex ideas I do not like are polished centre links on the bracelet and (to a lesser extent) maxi cases with larger hands (I suppose I could get used to this). Everything else I can live with - (oh, except the crazy price increases).

This doesn't bother me at all, mostly because I already have the one I wanted.

i go in and out of phases with watches. sometimes i love the bling and IRB(inner rehaut branding...remember those threads TRF?), and then i switch over into 'purist' mode and only want smooth inner rehauts and no polished center links...this is usually when i am fishing and into Ernest Hemingway type thinking.

IMHO I like the new looks. I think its a fine upgrade, a nice touch of technology and a bit of a fresh look of an old classic.
But I am one of those guys who isn't really into classic cars either. I appreciate them, but I have no interest in owning one. I love the new looks and designs. |

Rolex professional watches are classic tool watches. Gentle evolution is fine but in my view Rolex is going beyond that with some of the proposed changes they are introducing. Polished centre links in no way enhances the utility of a tool watch. It turns it into a hairdresser's watch. It might be ok on a GMT which is perhaps less of a tool watch - it would be outrageous on a Sub. These changes just take Rolex further away from their great heritage. |

[QUOTE=Quicksilver;770661]If it's not broken then why change it.
Rolex professional watches are classic tool watches. QUOTE] That's where you go astray. They are no longer tool watches. No one with a brain pays nearly $6K for a beater (read tool) watch. Be sure to weigh in next time when folks say how "suitable" a SS Sub is with a suit and tux. It can't be both can it? Well maybe it can, if you dress up the Sub a bit (precisely what Rolex is doing). There may be 1% of Sub owners that have taken their watch deeper than the bottom of a sink, probably one in a million to a tenth of it's rated depth. Get over it, we're "Hot Tub Lloyd Bridges" types and Rolex knows it too. |

Rolex probably know us better than we do ourselves. You can't be so good at marketing unless you understand psychology. Still prefer the more utilitarian look though. A bit of dressing up is fine - Rolex just need to know when to stop. |

Just as another perspective - I am somewhat new to this Rolex fascination - and I don't think I would have been as interested in a GMT model without the Maxi dial or the ceramic bezel. These are features that attracted me to the watch.
Also consider that you have some important improvements beyond cosmetic. The much improved clasp, the AR coating on the cyclops.... I say go with progress and embrace change! |

Polished centre links in no way enhances the utility of a tool watch. It turns it into a hairdresser's watch. But they do look good on certain models,ie YM, Daytona.

I like the Maxi-dial, ceramic bezel, engraved rehaut and yes, the shiny center links as well. I wear it at work, home and out on the town. To me, the GMT IIC (and more of the Professional models in the near future), is more of a dress watch and less of a tool watch. Rolex does know us all very well and they are catering to out subconscious needs.

I only stated 2 cosmetic points! The watch itself has not changed with the exception of the "II" watches....the yachmaster II has it writen on the bezel and becme the clownmaster Next rolex will we putting on its bezel "Daytona" "Day Date" " DateJust" And what did the laser crown on the crystal achieve except that if i get a service crystal and want to sell my watch it will be up to bargin just like a car having work done and getting less for being in a accident. I believe in moving ahead.....come up with some new watches, new dials, Different Bezels, A moon Phase? Complications? Skelton Face to see the movement.... Differentt bracelets......... but keep the classic Rolex Classic!
