Which DD40 is the better choice ?

I had the good fortune of obtaining a 36mm silver dial platinum DD, but keep feeling that its at bit small for me.

I have a Hulk, a DJ2 and an Explorer 39mm already, and find the DJ2 to be a bit on the large side, and never wore a more comfortable Rolex than the Explorer 39mm.

I am considering flipping the 36mm platinum DD, but have no idea what kind of price i should ask for. And how far the proceeds would bring me towards a WG DD40.

Ideally, I'd replace it with a WG DD40 with either the Green dial or the Black strobes Rhodium dial. It has to be either WG or Platinum, and I lean towards WG simply because of the price.

I can't seem to make up my mind. The black stribed rhodium dial is stunning but also the conservative choice. More sporty than the silver rhodium, but still conservative with its color and stick markers.

The green "anniversary" dial is beautiful, but I wonder if I'll tire of the color, which is arguably much more subtle than the Hulk, but still a statement in itself. Also, the Roman numerals make for a much more busy dial than the stick markers, and I haven't tried Roman numerals before.

I lean towards the green dial, but wonder what I should do.

Opinions and wrist shots are most welcome :-)

Thanks,
Henrik

Get the one you like! You can always get the dial changed. I got the rose gold DD40 with honey comb chocolate dial and I'm planning to switch it out next year for he Roman numerals chocolate dial for a bit.

Do you really want to flip a 36mm silver dial platinum Day Date? Don't do it.

I'd go for the blue dial as you don't have one already but do have green. I prefer the LVc green to olive.

Neil has a good point. Since you don't have any blue dials, the WG DD40 in blue is amazing.

I would be torn between the blue and green.

Probably give the nod toward the blue as the green seems to be carrying a stiff premium to get one and you've already got the LV.

As someone who dislikes the hulk and kermit...my WG DD-40 with olive is easily the watch I've kept the longest. It doesn't get boring...something about it.

Personally I'd give the 36mm DD a chance. Get it plenty of wrist time and see if it grows on you.

36mm DayDate's are great. The Stick Markers seem smaller and suit the dial better IMOP on a 36mm

If its white gold only then get the Blue Dial. If its RG I'd get the Choco Dial.

The green to me got very boring quickly. I flipped my Olive green for a Chocolate. The color of the chocolate is amazing in sunlight.

P.S DD40 will be perfect size. You seem like you have similar wrist size to me below. 6.5 - 6.75 inches.

Anniversary or blue are both so stunning. Love the colors and the deconstructed Romans.

To my eyes, the vertical stripes grey dial reminds me of an Aqua Terra....

I would certainly go for olive.
You could try a different dial in the DD36 and see if that helps. Otherwise that plus the DJ2 is going p get you fairly close on price (will need a bit more cash)

Green anniversary dial is the standout. I do really like the striped rhodium dial but feel it's very subdued and might not hold my interest in the long run.

Keep this DD36 pt. Looks great on you.

If you must, I too vote for dd40 with anniversary olive dial.

HAGWE. Cheers!

Hi Henrik.
You do seem very confused.
Good taste doesn't really change that much. What's in vogue, does. You should aim to purchase a watch when you are in love with it. That would naturally guarantee that you remain in love forever.
Your previous misjudgements include the 36mm DD - which you now feel too small & the 41mm DJ - which you now find too large.
You say you want a WG or P, but which? P will have 34% more mass than WG. They will feel very different from each other. Given your propensity for falling out of love with watches, I think you should settle on the model in either metal first. Then look to the dials, as someone has already said - a dial can always be changed.
Regarding the black/green dial issue. You've already sad you might tire of green. There are not many things one can trust in life, however the absolute certainty is yourself. Trust yourself. You think you might tire of green - so back yourself and walk into a dealership with the reservation that you'll look but probably not buy the green dial. If you then buy the green dial, say it's a gift and might be brought back. Leave garantee card unregistered and stickers on. Look/ hold the watch all you can for a few days. You will then know if it's a keeper or to return it for another.
I sense you possibly don't even need to supplant the DD with a new watch. It doesn't matter what size your wrist is. What matters is how you perceive the watch to look when on your wrist. If the Hulk loved the look of the 34mm Airking on his green wrist, he should wear it. If Peewee Herman loved the look of the 44mm Yacht Master II on his skinny wrist, he should wear it.
Your DD will always look small compared to your 39mm favourite watch. My smallest is 34 and largest is 44. To me they both look good on my wrist.
Dark stripe dial - conservative.
Light stripe dial - less conservative.
Green dial - ostentatious + collector appeal.
Which are you?

Hi Sam,

A lot of nuance and great thought in that reply. I'll try to provide a bit of background to some of the things you very appropriately address :-)

I had been looking at the DJ2 with the blue dial for a long time, but felt it was to the large side. Loved the dial, though, and for apparent reasons - it is stunning. My smart and attentive wife noticed this, so when i turned 40, she deiced to give me this in a most generous present. I love the gesture, but honestly struggle with the entire thing, as I feel that it is not right to sell a gift which is why i prefer to keep feelings out of my collection - something that can't be done :-)

The DD 36 plat was, unbelievable as it sounds, just the good fortune of a rather kind family member that given the rather long service time for the one on my wrist decided to acquire a new one, and when realising that he had one to spare, decided that it would do better in my care than in his drawer. A gesture so generous, that I struggle to understand it, but I am very grateful for it.

So my two misjudgements are, in lack of better words, just Lady Luck spending to much time elsewhere and thus not knowing the extreme appreciation for detail what watch-smitten aficionados have.

The Hulk was my own idea, and I love it. I enjoy it but wouldn't recommend it for someone as their only watch. But the olive dial of the DD40 is so much more subtle that I think it can be pulled of as not being ostentatious - but I do understand your thought on that matter.

I am trying to think of the DD36 I have in a very practical manner. Is it best to leave it in a drawer hoping for my taste to change, taking it out for winding and admiring once in a while ? Or is it better to accept a hit on the price and trade "down" to a WG DD40 with the right dial and most importantly size (it being rhodium black, or Olive), and perhaps getting a watch that I will wear with pride. It's a bit like the shirt you were given, that you know you should love for its obvious qualities, but hangs in the back of your closet because you feel it's a bit wrong for you despite its objetive qualities.

I am trying to follow the wise advice of c41006, who said wear it plenty and see if it grows on you, but I think the watch and gesture is to good the be left in a drawer and/or be worn with an "guilty" explanation as to why it isn't bigger than it is.

But my doubts arise from the natural wish to love the watch as it is, both because of my warm feelings for my generous family member, as well as the fact that it is and absolutely cracking time piece.

But as for you final question - which am I - I must be a bit ostentatious, but would rather believe that I am so in a bit more of an anniversary DD40 Olive manner than the very outright SubC Hulk manner :-)

As for my swaying between the two dials (black rhodium and Olive), I feel a need to consult people with the same addiction, given the rather significant price of these beautiful watches :-)

Since you feel the DJ2 is too big and the DD36 is too small. Sell both and get a DD40 with the blue dial or the grey. I love the green but I feel I would get bored of it especially since you have a Hulk already.

I honestly think this looks fine. The watch is beautiful. You get both watch and bracelet presence on that wrist.

Do you have a thicker arm? Would wearing a long sleeve change the perception?

In pictures a 40 looks better because you see less flesh. This would be mitigated with long sleeve. But this is only good for glamour picture shots.

In reality, to me, the 36 is well proportioned. Again, if it looks find on James Gandolfini who is a big man, should look fine on you.
