SS Daytona C case too small

I finally got the call from one of the ads
That I have purchased a lot of jewelry from not just watches.

He had a brand-new black dial and white dial Daytona Cs.

I am currently wearing a 2016 basil white gold blue dial Daytona.

When I try to win the Daytona Cs there was a really noticeable difference in the thickness of the cases... The solid white gold case was noticeably thicker than the two stainless steel ceramic cases.

I know that this is been a topic on the forum and I know that with those Rolex there really is no rhyme or reason why there should be different case sizes but at least for me it really did turn me off to purchasing one of the Daytona see models.

He was selling them for MSRP and I realize that I could've bought one and then sold it to a gray dealer and perhaps been money but I declined and just told him to please call the next few people on his waiting list so that they could get the two watches that they wanted at MSRP he was selling them for MSRP and I realize that I could've bought one and then sold it to a gray dealer and perhaps made money but I declined and just told him to please call the next few people on his waiting list so that they could get the two watches that they wanted at MSRP… yes making money going to flip is nice but I know that there are a lot of fellow TRFers that I've been waiting over a year to get this grail
watch and I don't think it's worth me making a couple thousand dollars at the expense of someone who is truly waiting on the list to get their own finally

I was just wondering if there were others who got the call but maybe change their mind once they saw that the case was not as thick?

Get me wrong it's a stunning watch but I guess it just wasn't for me

Applaud you for doing the right thing. I actually wasn't aware there is a case difference between stainless and gold...should check that out in more detail..but the stainless I think wears very well for me...I've only tried the white gold meteorite Daytona and I didn't think that was thicker....but that's a much older watch.

Thanks. I guess it's not that the white gold case is thicker than the stainless steel ceramic case… But that it slightly wider… Kind a hard to see but at the top and bottom of the right side of the white gold case there seems to be an extra millimeter or two of case width...., same thing with the platinum and rose gold case model but stainless steel models and some of the yellow gold models it seems like the case is a few millimeter short so that the bezel lip is over the case side whereas with the precious metal ones except for the yellow gold ones the bezel
ends and then there's a few more millimeters of gold or pt after that. One of our fellow members put together an incredible CGI demonstration of how the width of each Daytona differ.

I couldn't see the difference upon reading the post at first but now comparing up close the stainless steel ceramic model with my white gold model I can clearly see that my white gold model is actually millimeters wider and it kind of makes the watch more of a masculine size since it makes it bigger .

It does wear small which is why I prefer the heft and substance of it as a PM.

I love the case size, side on it makes the profile really sweet to look at, with crystal, case and case back. The proportions are great.

Yeah, I thought the size difference was in the width of the lugs? (A little more substantial for the PMs?)

It's been discussed before that the lugs are made thicker on the PM daytonas. I believe it's a known thing. I would certainly not have a problem with my SS Daytona having a little more girth, but I also feel it's basically perfect as is.

I may be wrong but I think I've read somewhere that the reason the PM models are thicker on the outside is that the PM case is more hollow than the SS case so they would use less PM in the manufacturing process for cost reduction purposes.

I may also be wrong, but I heard it was to stop people from swapping the dials and making an SS model look like the PM version.

The easiest way to pick the difference besides the colour of the metal is to look at where the crown guards slope down toward the lugs. On the SS, the crown guards and the lugs are completely separate, but on the PM models, they appear to blend gradually together.

The lugs also appear to be a bit shorter on the PM version.

A while back, someone posted a very cool animated image of various Daytona cases superimposed on each other...As one Daytona appeared, you could see the differences between SS, WG, YG,, RG etc... wish I could find it.

I was looking for it as well. There was a discussion about the case size a couple of weeks ago but they posted a different picture, not the gif.

I am comparing mine to a picture of a SS one. It looks like on the left side of the case, mine is just a hair wider than the bezel, whereas on the SS one, the bezel is wider than the case.

On the right side, where the lug meets the crown guard, mine is slightly wider than the bezel whereas on the SS it is slightly narrower.

All these words.....it would be a lot easier to visualize with that gif...

My Platona on a 6.5 inch wrist and the Daytona C on an 8 inch wrist..I think both look great and in this case...size doesn't matter!!

I had a black dial and white dial.

I sold the black dial for $500 more than what I paid plus tax. It was slightly used (mainly did it that way in order discourage resellers - the $500 was meaningless to me).

I still have the white dial but that stays in the safety deposit box.

The case is way too slim and the the hands are too svelte. The diameter does not feel 40mm. It feels too small on my wrist. I am not a Daytona fan. It was the ultimate "shouldn't I like this" purchase. I didn't know it until I wore it for a few months that I wasn't a fan. I wear the white dial sometimes when I'm meeting clients and I'm wearing a suit. But in general I hate hate hate dress watches - date justs and such. The Daytona does not feel like a "sports" watch. It feels dressy and very dainty and dare I say, effeminate.

Sorry. I know that's really contrarian and no one agrees. But it's my opinion. Beautiful watch, but not a fan. And I'm one of the few who have had both.

Really respect your opinion based on having owned both the current black & white models. Would you say they are overhyped / overrated for what they are?

In truth, yes.

I feel that the difficulty to get the watch has people way too enchanted. I was one of them. The watch is beautiful, please don't get me wrong. It is pure class. And for those who use the chronograph complication, it makes sense. But it is small. And I feel like it looks somewhat effeminate on a moderately to largely sized wrist. Aside from the chronograph subdials, it just isn't a sporty looking watch. By that I mean the watch's architecture and form isn't sporty.

Not in the least.

It is a very dressy looking watch. "Pretty" would be an apt description. And I don't want a "pretty" watch. At least not for every day wear. I may wear my white dial once or twice this year because of that. It is very flat against the wrist. If you look at it from the side, it's really flat.

I hate that.

Wrist presence is negligible. It doesn't take up enough real estate on the wrist. And the lugs are so tapered and slender that it looks "cute." It makes the watch look even smaller and insubstantial.

That works for the figure of a beautiful woman.

But not for a robust tool designed for my wrist.

A man's wrist.

I want that to be rugged and substantial and have presence and look sturdy.

I'll wear my sub, blnr, ln, the balance of the year. They are robust and look the part of a sizable, substantial, tool watch made for doing things.

I usually don't opine about this watch because I bought two and it is so well loved on this forum that I don't want to ruffle feathers. But finally someone noticed what I did about the size so maybe this is the chance to disabuse others from making a buying mistake if they expect the Daytona to wear like a sub or gmt or one of the traditional Rolex sports offerings.

Let me save you the suspense, it doesn't.

Just so you know (as data points), I hate watches over 42mm (so not a "big" watch guy), the preponderance of my watches are 40mm, and I have a 7.5 wrist.
