Venturing into vintage

Hey everyone,

I'm being tempted by a good condition all white 1680 Sub from 1978. It's watch only at £6500.
Is that a fair price?
And will it be a good choice for daily wear?
My alternative is to buy a not-quite vintage SD with drilled lugs.

You may want to post pics of the said piece. A brief description doesnt tell us if it is original or if the parts are service replacements which will diminish the value.

Pearl looks luminova to me, insert may be service replacement entirely, hands look different than dial plots, case looks very polished. Could just be the ultra harsh light in the dealer prepped photos though. I'll leave it to someone more knowledgeable regarding the asking price being high or not.

Just a point on your query re the SD - if it is a 16600 with sapphire glass, you might find it a bit more durable as an every day wearer, depending upon what you do? Not wanting to take anything away of course from the 1680...it really is a great watch.

I think you can do better for £6,500. Replacement hands and bezel insert, case isn't terrible but has seen a fair bit of polishing. I'd continue looking.

The insert is a replacement with Luminova Pearl, the dial is an original mk2 although the colouring on the plots looks uneven in the photo's. In the first photo the hands look like they may be replacements but in the second taken at an angle they look like they COULD be original. It has seen a few polishes. £6,500 is cheap for a White 1680 in the UK, there is a very limited supply and the two on Chrono 24 are both advertised at £8k. At the end of the day there are much better examples (although difficult to find in the UK at present), it depends on what you are willing pay and compromise on. Personally I'd pass and be prepared to pay more

Get the nicest condition example that your budget will allow. If that means buying a newer watch then that's what you should do, you'll be happier in the long run.

I've ended up with a 2002 16710 Pepsi instead.

And within less than 4 weeks, I am now considering a (polished) Fat Lady v an unpolished 2000 16600 SD which costs about £1k less.

I'm really tempted by the pristine SD (without the usual NOS price tag) but the 16760 would continue the GMT story quite nicely (I also have a BLNR).

As always, I'd be grateful for any comments and advice.

Let's see some pics of your new acquisition. The 16710 is a great choice, although most would say it's not vintage. Now the 16760, that would qualify as vintage to most since its certainly pre 1989.

I really enjoy the old school aesthetics now. Alas, the bevelled edges on this watch are hardly visible.

Nope. They don't use that harsh of lighting...and they also don't use a clear plastic watch holder. I'm embarrassed to call that out because it means I've spent way too much time "shopping" on their site...
