Got My Daytona.....

I noticed a missed call on my cell from a number I didn't recognize. For whatever reason I called it back, turns out it was Jared calling to let me know they had a s/s daytona for me if I could get there very soon. Got there 10 minutes before closing and left with black dial. Here's the thing. I've always wanted white dial. Should I flip it? It seems that prices are dropping, (availability rising?) on s/s daytonas. Did I make a mistake? Should I put it away and wait for prices to go up & hopefully get white dial? Help!!

Flip it for the one you really want. By the time you sell it, the retail msrp will have gone up again. White is great. I have a white, my buddy has black. I would never switch.

Hard watch to flip these days...wear it if you like it. Just curious - old or new MSRP?

New MSRP $9925 - OUCH. Why is it so hard to flip now other than the economy stinks & the stock market is down 20%?

There seems to be more of them nowadays. They are still remarkably easy to flip in Asia, the USA may have slowed down a bit but they don't seem to have.

We're a recession right now here in US with the banks failing and more home foreclosures expected. Even more people are losing their jobs where I live, unemployement expected to rise.

If you can afford new Rolex now chances that you're wealthy enough to be recession proofed. I am really interested to see the price of used Rolex through this period.

Why did you buy black if you've always wanted white? Do they have a return policy?

Flipping it now would be really tough. For the first time, I've seen SS Daytonas selling for less than MSRP.

SS Daytonas seem to be in more abundance. I bet Jared could get the white one for you relatively quickly. It's a decent sized chain so they probably have some in the system.

All it takes is for one guy on the wait list to decide he can't afford it right now and then it's yours.

There is definitely a lot of people opting out on them, so now is your chance. I've definitely used this little recession of theirs to my advantage with that, picking up A LOT of things from dealers for MSRP or under, because they desperately need to sell. We're talking about $110,000 beautiful sculptures for around $50,000 It's a wonderful time to be a buyer.

Not at all, but it's a simple fact... whether it be real estate, certain stocks, art, watches, cars... now is the best time I have seen in my lifetime to buy (other than the 80's real estate crash in Canada).

A lot of people have a lot of things they can not afford to have, and should never have bought. These people are now trying their mightiest to offload them.

Try to flip it and you should not lose money and then get a white dial. If Jared would take it back then do that instead

wait another 6 months if you want to see things get cheap. rolls royce even said their sales are down not because their customers don't have the money but because they are either afraid to spend it or don't want to look like they are rubbing it in everyones face. as in the great depression showing expensive things is quickly becoming out of fashion. this is going to get much worse before it gets better. trust me when i tell you getting a new daytona at msrp will be very easy in a short time and buying one bnib second hand with no warranty will be below msrp just like the others.

You can always list it to trade for a BNIB white dial. There may be someone out there with a white dial but likes the black dial better.

I agree, I love my white face but it seems the black is in higher demand, there is probably somebody on TRF that would swap with you, maybe not the best solution but it gets you the watch you want right away.

P.S. Welcome to the Daytona Club!

Just got my first SS Daytona with white dial from AD in AZ. I was offered another in LA. IT seems they are more prevalent now. BTW, the AD in AZ also had a black dial available as well. I almost bought two, but decided to get a GMT II-c instead.

Congrats on a beautiful watch. I hope you get the white dial you want easily and painlessly.
And after reading this thread, I had no idea SS black dials where so much easier to get now! They have always been one of my top favourite Rolex watches!

Congrats on the new watch, can you not get RSC to change the dial? Wear it and enjoy it, you can get white dials from numerous sources.

I have heard that if you get a SS Daytona and you don´t like the dial color, you can send it to Rolex Service Center and they will change the dial for you. The trick is that only can be done to brand new SS Daytona and only once. Can someone verify this?

In the Uk you can change the dial for free in within the first 6 months, if it is anything extra i.e diamonds, MOP you pay otherwise free.

Rolex will not replace the dial on a SS Daytona, it is the one watch they will not touch.

Or so I have been told.

the stock market in japan crashed and they closed the stock market in india. british market has just opened and they are expecting it to go down. i have a feeling the asian market for this watch is going to lighten up some.

Or so I have been told.
I was told the same thing by my AD. When I first got my White Face, it was a little more difficult to tell the time at a quick glance, probably because I'm old and my eyes are failing, but I thought it was due to the fact I was used to looking at a black face dial (my GMT). The day after I got it I inquired about changing the dial and they told me Rolex wouldn't do it, quote: "Get used to it." Which I have.

i find it interesting they won't change the dial on request. if you are paying them to do something that is normal and not a custom dial i don't understand.

i was looking at a tt dj the other day at my ad that had a regular gold stick marker dial. i wanted a blue vignette dial with diamond hour markers and they said it was no problem at all. they would send it to rolex and they would change it, the cost was 1,500.00. why do they have a problem with doing it to a daytona?

Very good question Marcus, I don't have the answer but the AD said since the gurantee/serial number specifically states "Daytona White Face" changing it would amount to a modification. I agree you should have options, I guess the good news is I've gotten used to mine now and am glad I didn't switch to a black face.

Sorry, untrue. Why doesn't Rolex do this? Who knows, they just dont do dial exchanges on Professional Models. They also don't dial exchange within the first two year warranty period (I dont know if this is a strong suggestion or Official Rolex Policy). Probably because of the work involved in a dial exchange "wears" down the watch a little.

You are correct.

Unfortuntely I think the salesperson at the AD mispoke. Blue Vignette is not an upgradeable dial option. On TT or 18KT Rollies, you get 5 basic color upgrade options. Silver, Champagne, Black, White and Blue with Diamonds. Your AD could easily get a new Datejust with Blue Vignette dial for you to purchase.

Sidenote: Thanks to Marcus for posting your thoughts on the Steel Daytona. For a while now, I have thought the used price would fall. Your link proved this.

Just a thought - should I maybe flip GMTII-c that I really never wear, keep the black daytona & wait for white one to come along?
