1977 1675 caseback. Real or not?

Hi all,

This was removed from a 1977 Radial Dial GMT I bought a few years ago. I have now sold it but the buyer thinks it is suspect. Can anyone 100% confirm as I need to shell out for a replacement if it's fake.

I'm after informed opinions please, not just a single word response.

Thanks

Steven

What is the buyer 'suspect' of? Did the buyer point out something that does not look right?

He thinks the font and numerals are different from others he's seen. I am not sure what variances there are between stamping, if any.

My watchmaker runs a certified Rolex Service Centre and isn't sure if it is or not.

Why on earth would anyone put a fake case back on a real watch? Also have to question if a cheap lousy fake case back would: a) even fit B) be stamped at all.

I say tell the guy to behave himself and leave you alone. If he is unsure he should take it to an RSC and pay for the check up. If he doesn't know what he is talking about he should seek advice before winding you up and or stay away from expensive things he knows nothing about.

EDIT: I should also say it looks fine to me and note that Rolex revise fonts often, there is no rhyme nor reason, we see it all the time with variations between fonts on dials of the same reference watches etc.

I guess you owned it a while. Was it water resistant? If so, very unlikely the case back was fake.

Thanks for your comments. It's easy-ish to find out info on dials but casebacks are harder.

When I bought the watch, I had it serviced and swapped out the caseback for a sapphire crystal caseback much to the dismay of my watchmaker! He frowns on such things. So not sure if watch was waterproof then. I took it to him the day it arrived. The caseback sat in the box all this time until I sold it two days ago. I want the buyer to be satisfied. Hopefully this will help. He is watching the thread.

Cheers!

You'd very very surprised if you knew what was out there.

Asking the question "Why on earth would anyone put a fake case back on a real watch?"...Because those are called frankenwatches and people will cobble parts from anywhere. That's why. Don't you know this already??

And, if the guy is right about the case back being fake he should not "leave" anybody alone. He should have it replaced with a genuine one.

Why you said it "looks fine"...what did you base that on?

I think it is fine the fonts as mentioned did change and the later ones are different to the earlier ones.

I checked several of my case backs from 1974 through 1979 and the "1675" stamping from the linked photo is not the same as any in my photo archive. Everything else looked fine in the linked photo.

Thanks for all your comments. I have agreed to replace the caseback based on your comments.

The link to the image is no longer active as I hosted it online in my work portfolio.

Cheers!
