Smokey and the Bandit
TCM, Turner Classic movies, has events called "Fathom" Once a month, they take an old movie and put in on the big screen for two days only. I think next month is "Fast times at Ridgemont High" In September is "ET" November is "Casa Blanca" and the rest I don't remember but all good flicks. Highly recommend checking it out.
I have seen Smokey probably 50 times, have the new 40th anniversary DVD, and saw the original in 1977. I was 16. That movie started a love of mine of Trans-Ams that culminated with me buying one four years later. That car saw me all through college and Navy Flight School. Unfortunately, when they show it on TCM or other cable channels these days it is heavily edited, they don't even allow the classic Jackie Gleason: "You sumbitch!" So it is always a bit disappointing. Last night I saw it in the theater, in all it's glory. What a great experience. Got me nostalgic and made me laugh out loud (even though I know every line by heart). What a classic (IMHO). Love Gleason in this role. One of my most quoted characters of all time.

Love that movie! During that time frame, my uncle was managing a local Pontiac dealership. I was around 20 years old and ordered the black and gold Anniversary Edition. 455 engine with 4 speed manual transmission and t-tops. Had a lot of fun in that car. Still catch it ocasionally on cable.

I saw it in the theater in the summer of '77 as a kid.
My wife and I went last weekend and saw it in the theater. My wife was born in 1977 and had never seen the movie in a theater. It's fun on DVD.....but with an audience, it's much more so. If you have the opportunity, folks....see it on the big screen. |

I first saw that movie in school in the late 1970s. It was shown to the entire student body at an assembly, uncut and uninterrupted. I was around 11 or 12. Then again, I saw the Breakfast Club in a high school class and my high school also had a smoking area.
BTW-TCM shows movies unedited and uninterrupted. At least they do here. |

In 1978 I owned a 1977 black/gold WS6 TA.......no T roofs thankfully........one of the best cars I ever had. Must have been pretty cool to drive around in your dress whites in a TA back then. |
