Racing dial for 116520 Daytona

Hi

I have a 2003 116520. I have been thinking of maybe buying a racing dial for it. From my understanding the racing dials have not been offered for the stainless steel Daytonas, only for the gold/platinum versions. So I have some questions regarding that:

1. I know that it is possible to put a racing dial on my 116520, but how do the collectors look at that? I just like the look of them, but dont wanna seem like I ”pretend” to own a white gold Daytona.

2. The dial that I have been offered is the silver one in the pictures below. Has anyone seen the silver dial combined with stainless steel? Does it look OK?

3. The dial includes the red hands (the big one, and the three for the subdials). Can I use the minute/hour hands from my original setup together with the red ones for the racing dial, or is that not correct?

The pictures below are my watch as it is now, and the dial that I have been offered.

Thank your very much for any answers.

Found this tread now, which gave me a lot of answers.

Still wondering about the hour/minute hands. Are they the same?

I would suspect that any collector of a vintage watch would want an OE combination, not some kind of frakenwatch. However, the 116520 is hardly vintage, and there are enough of them out there that I don't think it would really matter. You need to do what you want to YOUR watch for you, not the next owner.

For sure though, you want to keep your original parts, don't sell them or throw them away! Even the hands, which I hear can't be reused.

As for the hour and minute hands, I think they are different on the racing dial, but I can't remember off-hand. A quick google search though existing pictures might do it for you.

Thanks alot m_j_b!

I will for sure keep all the original parts. Its a complete set, and I want to keep it that way.

I guess you kind of answered the minute/hour hand question as well. It doesnt really matter to much if the SS hands are not exactly the same as for the white gold(sure looks like it) It wont be a "correct" watch either way, so if I think it looks good, its good enough.

The only thing I didnt understand was the part were you said that the hands cant be reused. You mean the subdial hands? I have to look into that, cause that could be my stopper.

Thanks again

The non lume version of the racing dial, like the one you have is match with the set of 4 red hands.
The lume version does not have red chrono seconds hand.

I do not agree to any franken watch mods but that's my personal opinion.
The mismatch bezel is more annoying, any collector with knowledge knows that this is a non original mod may question pretense and authenticity.

No worry ,all parts are interchangeable, nothing better can happen with a Daytona than fitting on it a nice racing dial

I respect both "sides" here.

My object is absolutely not to fool anyone. I just love the racing dials, also without the gold bezel. I would see a bigger problem if you changed the bezel ass well. Then you are closer to the fooling-business :)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Appreciate it.

And Passionata; I love your watch :)

Fair point, if you keep the bezel as it is. Keep the original parts as has been said for when you might want to sell it, but as the PM dials are more interesting generally it is fine if you want to swap them in.

I say it's your watch and I think the racing dials really give the 520's a nice breath of fresh air.

One thing to keep in mind, though, the sub dial hands are very fragile...kind of like a tiny eye lash. It is not hard to imagine that they could be damaged swapping out for the red hands. You might want to budget an extra set just in case.

What Larry said. The subdial hands are frequently broken when removed so I'd suggest having a spare set on hand.
