What is the deal with these spinners?

Being almost 60 I dont know or follow today's gadget fads .....that said I saw them on national news one night ....it sort of reminds me of the clackers toy from late 60's.... which got banned for exploding i think if my memory has not failed yet.

A lot of people seem to like anything new, no matter how pointless.
YoYos, Pet Rock, Rubic's Cube, etc.
Even as a kid I never got this. Still don't.

As I recall they were banned because they could break your wrist.

Rubic's Cubes were a brain teaser and had a point if used for their intended purpose. Pet Rocks on the other hand, I never understood, and yoyos ment little to me as well other than being able to wack my sister from across the room and leave no evidence. This was my fidget spinner growing up:

Waste of money. They serve no useful purpose. The fad will be dead within 6 months just like any other toy.

Too busy catching Pokemons to worry about something so pointless.

They're not for me. I agree they're probably just a fad.

These spinners may be pointless to many but there are a lot of entrepreneurs out there chasing the next fad and this current one probably started life on a cocktail napkin and has made somebody very rich. Funny how the point of them becomes clear. It may be just one item in a long line of captivating products like silly putty or the slinky, which were accidentally discovered by the way. Oh how sweet it is to separate the public from some of their disposable income. I can hear the cash registers humming after that call we have so often heard, "Mommy, Daddy, I want one of those" !

I saw a bin at walmart full of them. Less than $5. But, I've seen some vids on youtube where a machinist makes some nice ones. But, still, haven't touched one. My 8 year old is into Legos. I'd rather him play with those than a spinner. I gave him my set from when I was little. Plus all the sets my dad and others have given him. He probably has 10 times the Legos I ever had. And he's building something as I type this. lol

Haha, that makes sense, and I am a bit sorry that I know the spinners you speak of as well. Thank goodness those spinners have fallen out of favor too.

I have heard them called "fidget spinners". I think the original point was to try to market to ADHD kids whose hands had to be in perpetual motion or they got in trouble.

Some of them are pretty well made and cool looking. I wouldn't spend a bunch of money on one and my kids don't ask for them.

We used to use a pencil and a wooden ruler as a spinner.

I actually got my hands on a fidget spinner the other day and it held my attention for about 10 seconds before I got bored of it.

The funny part is I heard the inventor didn't file for a patent and as such didn't cash in like they should have big time.

When you start seeing them offered in gold or platinum, you know the fad is nearing its end...
