The Coolest Watch On The Planet?
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/pa...-daytona-rolex
The watch that defined the term "Paul Newman Dial" is coming into the market. Ben Clymer gives all the details in this thread and they are awesome. I guess it is now worth between $750K and a cool $Million!

I think it will be well in excess of $1M. It's the pink unicorn of vintage watches.

"Here, here’s a watch. If you wind it, it tells pretty good time."
How cool is that!

Sorry, I just don't get it and probably never will. Nice example, wonderful provenance, but there are so many Valjoux 72s out there that look great and keep good time, I will never be able to understand that level of inflated value. Yes, there's only one. Yes, he was not just a celebrity but a pretty decent human being BUT does that really add MILLIONS of dollars in value? Is the currency so debased? Are the 1% just so obscenely loaded with cash that this is meaningless? Count me out, love the watch but nauseated at the madness.

Eric Clapton's went for just over $1M. I predict about $5M for PN's personal one.

The only thing to rival this would be Steve McQueen's actual 5512.

It should break all records for a Rolex, I can see the bragging rights driving a colossal bidding war over this and well over the high estimate of I guess 10m.

New article on Jake's Rolex World puts the price at 10-20 million at auction. Should be interesting. Is the watch worth it? The market will tell.

"The watch that in many ways can be credited with launching the vintage collectible watch market that we all know today" - Balderdash. There was a market long before.
"Some weeks later, none other than Aurel Bacs, the man who had set the record for the most expensive Daytona last year (and recently broke it once more) was in California to see the watch. - Poppycock. The record was set by the buyer, not the bloke in a suit with a gavel. Nice watch, if a bit grubby with PN DNA. Great old-school 'Hollywood movie star' - loved his films, especially those with Redford. The rest is hype, like this I wonder how and when (after PN's demise? Nice.) this generous gift went from Mr. Cox to Mr. Peck, and for how much... As for the auction result, it will certainly be notable What does a Paul Newman autograph fetch these days, or a jacket he wore? Millions?! Nah.
