Thoughts on JLC?
Thinking of either selling my two-tone sub (16613) to help buy full YG sub (16618), or keeping two-tone sub and adding a JLC Master Control.
Any out there have experience owning JLC? The Master Control would be a daily wearer and I'm curious how JLC would compare to Rolex. |

Many people who are into watches would class it on a par with the holy trinity AP, VC and PP and definitely above Rolex |

Part of the charm.
JLC is miles ahead of Rolex when it come to true Horology. Probably the most impressing Watch Maker IMHO.

Go for it. I don't have one yet but will purchase the MUT Moon in black or the new Reserve de Marche with blue dial. Amazing pieces.....I would say a slight cut above Rolex

I might be a one off situation but I had some TERRIBLE experiences with the Richemont owned IWC/JLC service/warranty. I was so soured to the brand that I decided to not buy another watch from any Richemont owned brand.

JLC has been called the watchmaker's watch and their watches are a different feel from Rolex...great movements and often good finish
however, their poor resale has killed their value..buy with a good discount or used market...

Deep history and well respected brand--especially by WIS. I really like some of the models. Keep looking at the MUT moon phase, but I took a bath on a JLC a few years back and while I really dig them, I just do not have the need for a dress watch. I loved the watch but only wore it once in a great while. Just more of a Sub guy.

Tough call...I really love JLC, but I much prefer a solid gold sub instead of two tone. I'd maybe get the solid gold sub, then be on the lookout for a jlc popping up pre owned in the future

Gold sub trumps your other options, IMO.

JLC is outright the best Swiss watch manufacturer around at the moment when price is taken into account.

I have owned the MUT Moon for a year and love the watch as well as the brand. Great craftsmanship and timekeeping for a decent price. I am looking at a couple other JLC's to add to my collection.

I like JLC and have owned one in the past. You have to buy the watch at the right price as they are very difficult to sell or trade in the secondary market for what I consider a fair value.

I just bought a JLC MUT Perpetual Calendar in white gold for $17,000 (full kit, 2 extra JLC straps). Couldn't find any other sales to compare it to, so no clue if that is a fair price. What does the TRF collective think?

That seems reasonable as retail price is about double that. Extra straps are worth a couple of hundred dollars each as well.

When you walk into a JLC boutique you will realize that JLC is a notch above Rolex. The number of complications, the finish, and the range of the offerings dwarfs the selection produced by the makers of Subs. If you look at Jaeger's more expensive offerings, think $30K+, you'll realize the meaning of Haute Horology.
As others noted, the re-sell value is exceptionally poor and I would not buy a brand new model unless for anything less than 25% MSRP. The market for JLC exists only among the brand's enthusiasts. If you are thinking of trading your watch to buy a Rolex, you'll take a major bath. If you dip into Jaeger, your best bet is to keep the watch or trade with a fellow JLC collector and bypass the middleman. My experience with the service by JLC has been awesome--the company agreed to replace a dial under warranty due to a minuscule defect you could barely see with a naked eye. However, I've read a few stories on Timezone where JLC owners were not so lucky. In one case the owner received his watch with a wrong set of hands. In another case, a hand got loose after the service. Also, note that for some services watches have to go back to Switzerland; the trip adds weeks to service time. Finally, Master Control will make a great daily wearer. It is light, comfortable, and practically unrecognizable by anyone but people in the know. I like its rather slim profile, because I can easily slide the watch under a cuff. It will be my next timepiece, as my trusted Nomos took a beating yesterday and its days as a daily beater are numbered.

I am curious why Richemont Group brands seems to have a less than stellar reputation for service, but you don't read too much about the Swatch Group brands and their customer service? Do they do a better job at it or is it because Richemont does more volume, thus we hear more about them?

O'really!
If I have a choice between a Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre à Chronographe and a solid gold sub for similar prices the JLC will win out every single time. (Plus the premium for precious metal Rolexes is silly) |

This model is stunning. Tried it on and still can't get it out of my mind. Beats Subs every time :-)
