Swallowing buttons
So I came home today to the news that my 1yr old daughter had swallowed 1/3" size plastic button. My wife was so devastated that she broke the news to me as a guilty confession.
I'll skip over the details on how this happened, but my wife had called our pediatrician in panic and was told that it should be okay but we should look out for obvious symptoms of her becoming sick and that we should go to the ER if anything seems abnormal. Now I know its common that toddlers swallow all sorts of things but not surehow to view this at her age. I know I shouldnt be asking for medical advice here but since I know we have some resident doctors here thought it wouldn't hurt to ask whether I should be overly concerned about this situation. We are first time parents so hope you understand. |

Yup...pretty common. Will pass through on its own most likely. My cousin swallowed a quarter once...and out came 2 dimes and a nickel! Kidding of course...but she did swallow a quarter and it passed through...

Plastic? Can't easily trace that with X Ray.
Will have to save all no. 2 diapers to confirm passage for peace of mind. Could be worse, could have aspirated it. |

My daughter ate a couple pennies when the baby sitter was watching her when she was about 4. Pediatrician said it was ok as long as she kept

Something similar happened with my first son and he was fine. We just checked through his you know what for a couple of days till we spotted it. One of the many perks of being a parent..
 ..but your daughter should be fine.

Buttons are a gateway, next it will be swords!...
For some reason my daughters would swallow beads, maybe because of their colors. They always came out, just like they went in. She will be fine... |

Make sure to look in the diapers. Should pass without issue. My daughter swallowed a hair clip when she was younger. We freaked out and the dr. Gave us the same advice. You'll be all good

Glad it worked out. Buttons are usually fine assuming she swallowed it and it's stuck in her esophagus. Button batteries on the other hand can be fatal and are often a surgical emergency. I've seen it myself. Very very dangerous.
I posted just to plug that if someone's child might have swallowed a button battery, they need to go to the ED immediately, and not some rinkydink urgent care. That will just delay diagnosis and treatment if necessary.
