Visit to the Submarine Escape Training Tower. SETT.
I was fortunate to visit this amazing facility yesterday. The tank is 30M deep and has 2 escape hatches below that in order to simulate a pressurised escape to the surface. We practised entering our survival rafts, upon reaching the surface, and conducting capsize drills and also sent into the escape hatch, in pairs, in our immersion suits where you plug into an air supply as they completely flood the chamber. It felt very claustrophobic to say the least. The instructors also form the SPAG (Submarine Parachute Assistance Group) and are on very short notice to deploy if required. To top it off the Chief Instructor was wearing a 16610 Sub, and I the 14060M.

Very cool! I can't imagine how claustrophobic that could be

I'm not sure if that is amazing or petrifying?
Either way it's very cool & a Sub is the only watch to wear for this particular activity. Thanks for sharing, looks like you had fun! |

This facility is at Portsmouth, installed in the 1930's for the Royal Navy for training in using the submarine Davis Escape Apparatus (invented 1910).
Have seen it demonstrated there and it really put me off forever being a Submariner! I just prefer to wear just the SubC watch! |
