Icon2 The future? France to ban sale of gas and diesel vehicles by 2040

Hmmmmm: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017...vehicles-2040/

2040 seems a long way off, but it's only 23 years from now....23 years ago was 1994!

"France is by no means the only country aiming to ban combustion-powered cars in some form. Germany wants to do away with 100 per cent combustion-powered vehicles by 2030, as does India. The Netherlands and Norway wish to do so by 2025.

Diesel and gasoline vehicles represented about 95.2 percent of French new car fleets in the first half of year, while electric vehicles hold 1.2 percent of the market. Hybrid cars make up about 3.5 percent."

Ok. So I'll be 66. Chances are I won't make it that long considering my health issues.

And thank god.

I for one, applaud this. I'll be gone or close to it when it happens, and I have no children that will benefit, but the world has to change. Maybe there is hope for humans

No hope dude.

And this relatively infinitesimal offering, sadly, changes nothing.

We are on a collision course.

So hybrids (a hydrocarbon engine charging a battery array that powers an electric motor) would be OK?

Otherwise it'll take them a lot longer to build all the charging stations every 200 miles on every road.

Not that big a country and you leave the house every day with a full charge. Shouldn't be that big a challenge, should it?

If you can get all the energy to charge the batteries from wind and solar and tide and algae energy then ok. Give Tesla an inside track and Musk will build the infrastructure to get the charging stations there.

Who dreams this stuff up...politicians, lobbyists, automobile manufacturers, NGOs? Even if they started 10 years ago, I doubt they would have the infrastructure in place to generate and distribute the electricity to support this vision.

I visit India fairly frequently and I love the place and the people. However, I cannot see them doing away with combustion vehicles in the next 13 years, not a chance.

It actually amazes me that cars, trucks, lorries, etc. get such a bashing when planes do far more damage to the atmosphere (so I was told by a grown up not so long ago). Maybe a pilot or suitable expert can chip in and confirm or educate me?

This is what leadership looks like. For the doubters and naysayers, yes, current technology may not support this forward thinking roadmap but if you don't try, you won't accomplish anything. It's always easier to do nothing. You may not agree with the direction but you can't dismiss the effort.

I remember a time when a politician said something crazy about putting a man on the moon. Crazy right! Never happen right! Good thing they tried otherwise multiple products we take for granted today may not exist let alone all the spin off economic growth. That was the last time any politician dared to show real leadership. Nice to see someone else finally taking up torch.

Europe is leading the way in this. I have owned a hybrid and liked it very much. I would own one again. They are quiet, fuel efficient and comfortable. I would even consider an electric car if I could make it work for the type of driving I do.

agree. the "it won't make a difference anyway" argument is a self fulfilling prophecy. Leadership is all about looking at a problem and saying "what if", not saying its too hard so we won't even attempt. You have to be prepared to fail to do anything completely new and leaders in this day and age largely refuse to take that risk, and then nothing changes.

He was probably talking about the vapour trails and how water vapour in that region of the troposphere has an effect on keeping heat in than CO2 from cars, buses, and trucks/lorries.
Man’s effect on climate change is minimal, both accelerating it and reducing it – the process is wholly cyclical and natural…but warmists/alarmists will point to the infamous 'hockey stick' graph and say, “There you go, incontrovertible proof!”

Getting away from the man-made-up climate change theory, the move to zero emissions from the exhaust is not without merit for those doing little more than the daily commute to and from work.
Air quality in built up areas is a concern, not least in European countries whose population all bought into the diesel argument for their car based on the greater mpg provided.
NOX and other nasty particulates are all higher with those than a petrol engine, even in stop-start traffic.

Given town planners have created the towns and cities we have, which has resulted in more congestion, rather than tear down the plethora of traffic lights and other road furniture, in order to make traffic flow more freely, it’s been forced upon the vehicle manufacturers to devise new ways to emit less in such environments – hence the number of cars fitted now with Stop-Start technology – not so bad for hybrids, but for as long as it works whilst the car in under manufacturer’s warranty, the long term reliability, like DPFs on diesel cars, is way down the list of concerns.

In that respect, plug-in hybrids or full EVs for short commutes is likely to see an improvement in town/city air quality, which isn’t a bad thing – but the number of recharging points is going to have to increase dramatically in the forthcoming years.

I well may not be around then...but it's no big deal. Technology is changing fast. When it comes to nations that aren't environmentally friendly look at China and India...not France.
