Explorer II 16570 value

Hey all I've been researching the Explorer II 16570..it's my first potential Rolex watch and right now I am wondering how the resale would be if I was to purchase a pre-owned 16570 and sold it in a couple years to upgrade to a submariner 116610 or GMT 116710. Are these pre-owned Explorer IIs holding their value??

They are pretty good. Datejusts are the ones that you need to be careful with. There are so many from the 1980's that are heavily used and not worth that much. But as for the polar 16570 see if you can get one with a 3186 movement, no holes case, solid end link. Those are more desired. Make sure you get the box and papers that helps for speed of resale. Personally I don't get watches with boxes or papers. But if you are intending to re sell I could see it being helpful. Dealers like when you have all the tags, box, papers, manuals etc. Hope this helps! I have the 116710LN black bezel. I love it. You will get it one day!

All the best,

Glenn

I love my Exp II polar 16570 and think it's the best bang for your buck Rolex. You prob won't lose any money but I'd hold onto it and add a ceramic later. You won't regret it.

I've had my Polar 16570 for about 9 months now and absolutely love it. It's a 2006, early Z Serial with solid end links, no holes case and 3185. I think it's probably one of the last 3185. Don't know if that will ever make it desirable or not but I'm not planning to sell.

I think this model seems to be having a bit of a resurgence, prices remaining reasonably solid.

Maybe get one to enjoy and take the two years to save up and add a Sub later!

I feel like price went up on these recently and will only continue to climb. My buddy has one (polar) and I love how different it looks from my BLNR. I think most people prefer the 5 digit over the 6 so prices are rising. Excellent first Rolex!

If you buy right you will not get hurt on a flip. With that said make sure that you get a complete example. Box, manuals and warranty card. It will make a big difference when it comes time to flip.

This is obviously impossible to answer. Two factors come into play....what will the market look like in two years, nobody knows. The other issue is did you buy it right? I have seen that exact watch sell for anywhere from $3-5000 used. If you pay towards the upper end you have more risk of losing money down the road.

I think finding one under $4k will take awhile.
I think the Exp II is gaining a cult following.

Find a late model Polar with the 3186 movement. They are enjoying a nice run up in selling price.

A tritium 16570 that has turned or beginning to turn is a lovely thing to see. Patinated dials are increasing in value. The trit dials ran from 88 to the mid 90s are are reasonable to purchase today and are the last that will develop patina.

Ironic that I sold mine in around 2001 due to the yellowing, to get a new one that was crisp white. Ah well. Patina is valued today in a way it hasn't been perhaps ever before. It used to just be considered "old" or "worn". Although today men wear women's jeans with lumberjack shirts and have bizarre strong man mustaches.

I don't think you are going to find one for 3500.00 in any decent shape, unless someone is selling and needs money fast. 4500.00 is about what you can expect. I agree they are building quite a cult following.

You know how it is, things and opinions change all the time. In the 90’s I sold a SS/18kt Sub that had a blue dial that would shift to purple under certain light conditions. Back then there was no special value to the color variation.

$3500-$3700 no box and papers maybe, and a bit loved is quite possible with some patience. usually $3900-$4300 area can fetch a decent example sans b&p. theres a second hand dealer I frequent that always has a bunch, used to be $3800, but he raised to $3900 last year.

Prices seem lower stateside to the UK but hey that's no shock, here in the UK the 16570 is still a relative bargain compared to other sports models as everyone is chasing the usual suspects!!
I picked one up a few weeks back and really like the watch, I skipped it for too many years!

I'm just gonna say this. If you're just going to flip it in a couple of years for a sub or GMT, then just save your money and buy the sub/GMT when you're ready.

You'll be money ahead for sure.

Lug holes or no lug holes? Does it really make a difference?

Well visually yes and it might make it easier to change straps with lug holes.

A long run so plenty of variants of the 16570 with cross over:

Black/White (polar) dial
T < 25/Swiss/Swiss made
Tritium/Luminover
Lug holes/no holes
3185/3186 movement
Engraved or not rehaut
etc

It's a great watch.

I got a polar 16570 v serial with 1386 movement. I would suggest getting one with the 1386 movement as they seem to be the most desirable example of a modern 16570

I purchased a 16570 black dial F serial no wear daily earlier this year and I couldn't be happier with it. It is a very understated Rolex and doesn't have a strong wrist presence. I was able to find a very clean example with box, papers and tag. I paid $4200 shipped for it and found it for sale in the classifieds on this site. I am regularly seeing them listed for $4500+ nowadays. Good luck with your search, but it right and you will never get hurt on this watch.

Also, the watch looks great and wears very well with a black Everest strap. I highly recommend purchasing a rubber strap for it if you do buy a 16570.

Absolutely love my 16570 regardless of resale value. I prefer the older tritium dials with lug holes because they still came with a slight chamfer.
