New Old Stock - Thoughts?

Good Day - I am looking at a couple DateJusts on line. Both are NOS. One from 2008 and one from 2006. Never been worn. Any thoughts on buying older watches. Things to look out for?

Thanks!

Curious, why do you want to buy an older watch as opposed to a new one?

If these things have been sitting unsold for a decade, I'd be asking for a very big discount.

I purchased a NOS Rolex DateJust 2009 with full set, at at superb price. Total about half of a 2016 model. No regrets. Go for the discount!!!

NOS watches are a great find. I would like to know details of why the watches have been sitting that long. I've seen (many) people selling NOS when they are in fact "gently" worn, but the full set is intact. If they are truly NOS and stored properly, they should run fine and within COSC specs. How does the seller define NOS? What kind of price is he/she wanting?

How's the price compared to new in 2006? I just ask as I think its a bit unfair to price against a brand new model from an AD. Prices get adjusted and new models demand new higher prices (generally).

I wouldn't be paying extra if these were 6-digit DJ's. If anything, I'd be asking for a discount as they haven't been serviced in a while.

You pay extra for new old stock condition, a week after wearing it you have a typical looking used watch that you over paid for. If your looking to put it away and not wear it hoping it goes up in value that's another story.

The two I am looking at aren't made anymore. Tuxedo and Turnograph.

He defines it as "Never Worn". If I could actually get a response, I would be happy to share with you his pricing. Not sure why they have been unsold so long. One's a Tuxedo DJ and the other a Turnograph. Major site (sponsor here) but not return call and no response to two emails. We shall see...

The jeweler I bought my NOS from explained to me that he's acquired many of his stock at store closings and Chapter 11 or 13 auction liquidations. Hence the reduced price.

Hope it works out! A few years back I got to buy a truly NOS Daytona from 1991. All stickers intact full set and the Loctite on the links was still like cement. It's really neat getting a time capsule.

This will and always be depending on the model and price budget or not, as some models are discontinued and will one day be different from the rest.

Classic cool old NOS is a great buy = caliber + reference

To me the new Rolex models are too sterile and over engineered. I prefer the older models and consider NOS pieces true gems…. I don’t know what it is, but there is just something special to me about these older discontinued models that never found an owner… I buy them when I get the chance, if the price is right.

Add to that the fact that many AD’s are now removing stickers as per Rolex HQ guidelines in an attempt to strangle greymarket sales of brand new watches at major discounts. That THEORETICALLY means that there will be less and less NOS pieces with factory stickers out there in the future…Granted, there will always be some of course, but supply may be a little more scarce. I just bought a NOS 2017 Rolex Explorer 16570 on the new type of certificates, with 5 years of factory warranty…. To me that’s just a true treasure

My only concern would be that it would likely need a service simply due to age.

I agree and I would also want to know why.

I wouldn't have a problem with NOS if it was something I wanted.
