About to come out of the closet...

I'm about to come out to my family... as a Rolex owner. My wife is excited for me that I've finally done it. I feel like the rest of my immediate family will think I'm nuts! Most of them know I've been buying, selling, and trading so it may not be a huge surprise.

What have been your experiences with family members or friends reacting to you owning a Rolex?

Most don’t understand the need or desire to own such an expensive watch, so I keep it to myself.

family don't care; rolexeses have been in 3 generations of my family so its not a big deal. they originally were worn purely for reliability and waterproofness before they became status symbols to the mainstream.

with friends, never really comes up in conversations but many of my friends are into watches anyway. but more-so other brands of similar value and performance.

Except my brother, no one else that's close to me is into watches. "Your nuts! Is it real? That must have cost a lot. A Certina would have shown you the same time (followed by an early morning conversation after a night out with a friend that felt the need to let me know on how is good and not to spend my own money)" are the reactions i've encountered. The only pleasant comment was from my girlfriend, who didn't know yet i just bought a Rolex: i was asking her opinion on a suit i wanted to buy, so i've sent her a photo while trying it on. She replied "now all you need is a Rolex". I was like "well, actually is on its way, just ordered it and waiting to pick it up"
Best way to enjoy your Rolex is to keep it to yourself. Be prepared for any reaction you can think of, once your watch will get noticed.

No one really cares except the one that likes to make big deals out of everything. I have a couple of friends (more friends of friends) that like to point out things like watches and other luxury things. It's funny that I have more expensive watches and been collecting watches long before I bought my first Rolex, but as soon as they saw me wearing a Rolex they had something to say about Rolexes not being all that great and its pointless to have one. I don't let any of that bother me, move on and go about my business.

What a bizarre thread. How are you going to "come out"? Invite everyone to a restaurant or host a party, tap a champagne glass then show everyone your wrist? What reaction do you expect? What if there's a Rolex hater who prefers Rado? Will there be a fight? What if someone shouts you down saying a fake is just as good?

My head hurts reading this thread............................:

This sums it up for me too. Sometimes we overthink these things.

Same here, most of us have friends and family and yet we are still on here day and night so that says it all!

Friends have been intrigued to find that, while these cost thrice as much as they first thought, most think a Sub is £2k, I have bought and sold a few SS pieces now and hardly lost any money at all, in effect I've been wearing a Rolex for years for free, and the resale situation in the UK is looking better and better.

Wife - supports the obsession.
kids - know they will get them when I die
Family - could care less and don't even know how much I have in watches.
Friends - a few know watches and we will talk watches, the others don't
Co-workers - are clueless and either don't wear a watch or if they do they wear a Apple Watch or Fitbit watch to track their steps. Boring....

Hahaha I was being quite sarcastic in the OP. But I'm going to be flying with my Dad today, and he usually notices my watches. I'm just thinking he will more than likely notice it. I've since sold practically every other watch I've had to get this. Don't take it as literal as it sounded. Just trying to have some fun.

From what I am seeing there are a lot of us alike. Nobody I know cares about watches unless it is a tech watch like Apple. My wife just does not care about watches and thats okay there not for everyone. I have worn my new 116610LVc or Hulk as many know it for the last 10 days and no one has noticed it but that is just fine I like flying under the radar. I bought the watch for my enjoyment no one elses.

Nobody really cares or has a clue of the kind of cash we lay down for these beauties...which is probably a good thing. My father, brother and I all had Rolex and my niece would laugh that our conversation would roll around to them from time to time. When she inherited my brothers and looked at the appraisal she was a bit shocked at the replacement value. She said I thought you guys spent like $1000 on those.

Buying women's Rolexes should be a big cost savings.

I don’t get it. Could you explain? Is he buying himself a watch or his wife?

My almost 7 year old son asked me out of the blue this week on why I had so many watches. He doesn't get it yet.

My wife gets it and although she doesn't understand it, she's okay with it. At the same time, I know not to go completely crazy. My kids--same thing. The rest of my family is not in the loop. They would want to know why and how much and would want to show me their quartz Timex and Casio (not that there's anything wrong with them) and imply how much smarter they are by spending $25 for a watch that keeps better time than my $8,000.00 Rolex. lol
