What I’ve learned during my European travels...
I’ve visited Germany, Switzerland, & France & I can’t find a single ceramic Daytona...& I’m getting sick of “the look” when they tell me we don’t have any.
I think I’ve visited about 20 stores so far. Only a few more to go lol |

Is this any different from the situation with ADs anywhere in the world? And was “the look” generally accompanied by a nugget of insight like “that’s a very popular model, sir”

Is this a joke? Not to be harsh, but what did you expect? Is there a SS Ceramic Daytona sitting in any showcase in the world? If so, The AD needs shutdown because they clearly have no customers.

We get calls almost every day at the AD where I work: "Do you have any stainless steel ceramic Daytonas just laying around?" Then they act all confused when I chuckle at the question. I had one person act surprised when I said that it is one of the highest demand watches in the world. Yeah, right, then why are you calling me from halfway around the world for one??

They are selling for over a 70% premium in some places, you really think doing a bit of travelling is going to get you one? No chance. These are carefully allocated.

It took you a trip to Europe to learn that? I would have been truly amazed if you actually found one.

While you were taking the time to travel to 20 different stores, others just called those same stores in the span of 10 minutes. Cheaper & faster rejection. ;-)

Just go to the Rolex Factory and ask for the manager.

No surprise. You will not find one in the window of any Rolex authorised dealer anywhere in the world. Thats why they sell for 50% markup in grey dealers all over the world.

And even if they would have any stock, there are plenty of dealers only selling to local VIP customers and not to tourists.

Just considering VAT refunds Europe will always be tougher than the US to get popular watches. They have both local customers and tourists competing for watches. Prices are not as attractive in the US at retail not to mention tax refunds so the US is really only competing for local customers as not many people fly there to go watch shopping.

in europe you have to tell a password to the AD seller if you want a daytona otherwise to only answer you'll get is “that’s a very popular model, sir” :)
comm'on if you want one you have to spy the delivery guy when he leaves the factory with his truck full of DaytoC |

The harder it is to get, the more people will want it because it adds to the mystique and exclusivity.

Everyone knows it is almost impossible to find one on the shelf. Now out of the 20 stores you visited it would have been more interesting to know how many hulk and batman you came across

You can also call AD’s around the world. I did that that with Daytona C, i had always an polite answer starting with ’complimentary’ sigh. Practically some AD’s have 18 months waiting list as they dont take more names on it, or some have waiting list of several years.
Daytona C is hunted, Sky-Dweller Blue is hunted. To some extent Deepsea blue and BLNR are hunted and also Sub LVc is hunted. And there are many hunters :)

I was in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2011, and in an AD window was both black and white SS Daytona. That is the only time I have ever seen one for sale at rrp.

I had a holiday in the south of France a couple of months ago and, in an act of pure ignorant hopefulness I emailed a few AD's along the route I'd take on my outward/return journey in the hope of securing a SS Daytona C. All replies were extremely pleasant and courteous and all (bar one) said non!
The one that didn't say no, pointed me in the direction of Zurich airport where, I believe, there's no waiting list but if they get one in on their allocation from HQ, it's first come, first served. BTW, I also asked everyone at work who travels internationally for their assistance and they all came back empty handed. Fortunately, my name, eventually, rose to the top of the list... |
