Do you wear your biggest watch for a suit fitting?

Hi all,

Over the past couple of years I've been having my suits, shirts and ties made for me at my tailor here in Melbourne, Australia.

I used to wear my DJ 36mm to the fittings as it was my tallest watch and my collection only consisted of two watches.
Now I've picked up a Sub Ref 114060 and I've now asked myself the question since I have a second fitting this week, "do I keep wearing the DJ to my future fittings or do I wear the Sub?".

It also made me wonder, would you wear your biggest watch in for your business or casual suit measurements and fittings?
What cuffs do you prefer?
Would your watch be so large that you'd have to open up the working buttons on your coat sleeve?!

When in doubt, go French. I have no problems matching my cuff links to my timepieces or ties. Watch clearance on French cuffs is also a great deal more forgiving.

If your going to wear your watch with the suit, wear it. If not, the watch won't fit with the cuff. Tailor made is specific to each measurement and if they measure a DJ, that is much smaller than a Sub so you will have issues.

If you have a watch that is so large that you have to open the sleeves on the jacket to wear it...could I suggest you keep that for jeans

I would wear the Sub if you are having your shirts custom made and will wear it with the shirt.

For the coat, unless you are wearing a deep sea challenger you should be ok.

I used to wear my dssd with French cuff shirts off the rack all the time. It would get caught often so I flipped it as I cannot see having that much $$ wrapped up in a watch and not being able to wear it 5-6 days a week or weeks at a time when I travelled.

I have my dress shirts made with a "watch allowance." The wrist opening on the left cuff is 3/4" larger.

French cuffs and links generally provide plenty of clearance for a Sub. I prefer french cuffs anyways; although I only wear a suit and tie a few times a month anymore.

I used to wear French cuffs regularly but maybe the last 5 or so shirts I've had made, they've been mitred cuffs either single or double buttoned.

Might be time to get back into those cuffs.

I forget how big DSSD can be for daily wear.

I do have a watch allowance on my left arm on my shirts, just curious whether other people have a standard when getting fitted etc.

Could be the cool new look when big watches come back in flavour, opened shirt and jacket sleeve showing all watch.

I would take my biggest watch but nowadays I worry more about my belly not fitting my suit than my wrist.

I’d wear the watch I’d most likely wear when wearing my suit. It wouldn’t make sense to me to wear some 45mm watch that’s 20mm thick when getting measured for a suit if I never plan to wear that watch with the suit (or dress shirt for that matter).

I cannot imagine any watch being so large that it would not fit under a suit coat cuff

I have all of my suits and shirts custom made. My tailor has my measurements and taste in clothing. I do not have an issue with the cuffs not working as I do not wear anything that is so fitted a watch would not fit. I only wear French Cuffs in dress shirts as I like cufflinks and the overall look.

If you want the Sub to fit under your cuff, wear it for future shirt fittings.

I don't see why it's necessary for suit fittings, the jacket cuff shouldn't be so tight that a 1.3 cm high watch won't fit

Edit: I have barrel cuff shirts exclusively, except for a couple of formal shirts

With suits I only wear French cuffs, no problems with my watch fitting whatsoever.
