Icon9 Wildfires Erupt Overnight in Californias Napa Wine Country Destroying Wineries

It looks as if some very historic and significant wineries have either suffered major damage or been destroyed early this morning by a fast moving wildfire.

San Jose Mercury News, Monday October 9

"Dozens of early Monday morning fires erupted across Northern California’s premier wine country, spreading quickly, fueled by high wind gusts. Residents evacuated at a moment’s notice and countless homes and businesses burned, among them many well-known wineries, restaurants and hotels.

Several wineries in Napa’s Stag’s Leap District, one of the valley’s premier cabernet sauvignon growing regions, have burned in the Atlas Fire, including Signorello Estates. NBC News showed video footage of the William Hill Estate Winery being consumed by flames. Areas under threat from the fires stretch from Northern Napa Valley, near Calistoga to Southern Napa along the Silverado Trail and Soda Canyon Road.

In Sonoma County, the fire reportedly has destroyed Willi’s Wine Bar, The Fountaingrove Inn and the Hilton Wine Country Hotel in Santa Rosa. In Glen Ellen and Kenwood, residents have reported that Chateau St. Jean and a local lavender field are gone. Locals also report that fires are burning Kenwood and Kunde wineries, while others note fire fighting efforts to try to save B.R. Cohn. The fire also appears to be close to Benziger winery.

A blaze on a Sonoma Valley ridge threatens nearby wineries, including Scribe and Gundlach Bundschu. The nearby Moon Mountain district, where wineries and vineyards are on steep, remote hillsides, are also at risk."

My sister in law is there this week. she texted about the fires and said they are out of power and water, but seem to be ok for now.

I hope everyone is safe.

As of 12 noon today, there have been no reports of injuries or deaths pertaining to the fires according to the California Highway Patrol and CDF Fire. Thank goodness!

Unfortunately, quite a few casualties have been reported. My niece's father in law lost his home. My brother in law, who just bought a home in Napa, is OK for now. I have friend in Santa Rosa who also escaped the fire by about 1/2 mile. We haven't seen anything like this in a very long time.

I was hopeful when the initial report came out of no fatalities earlier today, but now I am seeing all of the new reports of up to 10 right now. Very sad for sure.

Fire season is horrible this year. All the rain made for more vegetation and it's been very dry and bad Santa Ana winds. Another fire just started in Orange County where we just had one a couple weeks ago. still getting mixed reports but last I saw on the news it was 1,000 evacuated and 11 houses destroyed and several thousand threatened with 0% containment. Winds were gusting to 50mph and the fire was moving too fast to fight so firefighters were trying to save lives and structures rather than trying to contain at this point

Had one on the hills behind my house last year but thankfully OCFA was quick to respond with multiple helicopters and knocked it down quickly.

I got out of bed last night at midnight because I smelled smoke. It ended up being from the fires. We are in SF on top of a hill and the whole inside of the house smelled like smoke. Found ash on the windowsills this morning (some of the older windows in back are original from 1906 and don't seal so well). Got to work in Silicon Valley today and could still smell it. Crazy. Best wishes to all of those in its path.

Hey Matt it's unbelievable what's been happening. Our winery is at Hwy 101 and Shiloh Rd in Santa Rosa. My parents were evacuated last night as the fire is about 5 exits away down the 101. The family and the vineyard are safe, but nobody will be sleeping tonight.

Last week I deal with the Las Vegas tragedy, and now this at home

Stay strong Trace. What a bummer and just shows nature wins every time. We just need to be there to pick up the pieces.

Best wishes for everyone affected by the fire, stay safe out there.

Damn Trace. That’s a lot of emotional duress to process. Hang in there and I hope the family winery is spared. I was just reading about these fires this morning and the destruction and death/missing numbers are already high and there’s no rain in the 7 day forecast. Not good.

My coworkers and I were swamped today in the Control Tower. We didn't stop launching and recovering these fire fighting aircraft going to all these fires.
