GMT II authentification help please :)

Hi guys,

Im looking at this GMT for sale, and was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on the authenticity? I've tried comparing it to online images but don't trust myself. The sale price is below market value so just trying to get an idea.

The seller is a bit difficult and could only get these photographs, but i will be inspecting watch (after travelling a while) in person, and wanted to know if the journey could be worth it? What things should i be checking out with the watch in hand?

We’d need much better pictures and to actually have the caseback opened, but as it sits, I don’t see any red flags.
May be a service dial with the combination of luminova, holes case, and hollow end links.
Do you know what year it’s supposed to be?

I will wait for the experts, but yeah, if you are unsure, I will meet him at a jeweller’s shop and have the caseback off and the markings between the lugs examined to be safe.

I like seeing an old Rolex with war wounds like that. Prefer that over a safe queen

Better pictures are needed to be sure. If the seller is not willing to help then it's probably for a reason and I'd passed on it. I sold watches before and I never had a problem to answer questions and provide additional pictures to prove the watch is genuine.

It'll take me about 2 hours travel for the inspection, so i think i'm going to go at least check it out tomorrow anyway. Wish me luck!

Very likely Genuine because replica 16710 have lower crown height to correspond with their modified GMT 2836-2 movement - they could never get this feature right.

Clasp is genuine

More pictures needed however to ascertain if this is franken watch

But so far I am strongly leaning to genuine as other features add up (e.g. end link number engraving, bezel teeth, handstack)

Thanks for all the replies guys, and thank you to the moderators for moving my enquiry to the correct sub forum.

I'm just on my way to inspect the watch, I think if the serial places it in the late 1990s and the reference engraving looks good I will go for it. What esle should I be looking at specifically when I have the watch in hand?

From what I can tell it is Hour/GMT/min/sec - which would be correct but will check with watch in hand.

First picture shows the red gmt hand overlaps the hour hand which suggests genuine

It's true that this is no longer the definitive way of distinguishing a replica/genuine GMT Rolex as the latest replica 116710 has the correct handstack using a modified 2824-2 movement (with an added module). But to my knowledge, non of the older replica 16710 ever had a reliable correct handstack movement and even if this example did have a correct handstack, the crown height and crownguard corresponds to genuine

I got the watch, thanks for all the help guys!

It is a 1996-7 serial with a service dial, as the dial glows but the hands do not. I might try to source a tritium dial so if i want to make it 'correct' in the future i can. The watch is in good condition, bevels present and the bracelet clasp number matches the year of watch.
