Age appropriate rolex
Just a thought provoking exercise....
Maybe it’s been asked, I haven’t seen it. I know I’ve seen the debate on....“am I too young for yellow gold” Or Two-tone is for “old men” So I’m curious....is there anyone who thinks a certain Rolex model says to you... I’m too “mature” for that model (too bright, too flashy, etc...) Or I’m not old enough to pull that off? Happy Monday |

i think it depends. Men of a certain age look better wearing TT dressed very casually but for me it would look out of place in anything less than business casual. So its age related i think.
I think that the watches themselves are not restricted to particular age groups but the settings in which the watches look good being worn in depends on age.

No right or wrong answer. Depends on your own style, and what you are comfortable wearing.

Hmm...good question, Richard.
I sometimes think there are models that look better on me, but I also think it's more to do with the timeless-ness of the piece...like a DD, DJ, Sub, GMT, etc. These are classics and I just tend to feel more comfortable with them. Now as far as flash or brightness...given my age I would probably do better with something that's as old and battle scarred as me....but I usually opt for the newer model. It's really more to do with the fit and feel of the watch than the looks...for me anyway. |

It's all down to personal preference. For me, I haven't seen a single TT watch in the Rolex catalogue that I would wear, they just don't do it for me.
You see young rapper type's wearing yellow gold DD's but they look equally good on a sharp suited businessman. Whatever floats your boat... |

Off this forum, I generally see men over 60 mostly wearing under 40mm and under 30 wearing 40-45mm watches, which stands to reason, but I think once you have joined a forum and you take a deeper interest then one tends to match the watch more to our personality and personal preference and not so much to the more arbitrary measures of size or metal.

Long time lurker, first time poster, but I found this thread interesting... I had a 16234 from '01 which I fell out of love with within around 6 months of owning but kept for a few years, before chopping in as a part-ex for my current Sub Hulk (which I absolutely love). I feel that's probably more to do with my style sense than with my age (31) though, and that bigger, sportier watches are more fashionable for most people of all ages. On reflection, it probably didn't help either that just after buying the Datejust my wife commented it "looked like a girls' watch"!

It's not so much what you wear as far as clothes and jewelry go but how you present yourself. However, if someone has theses thoughts about a watch I would say that, deep down inside, they just aren't convinced it's for them and should think about it a bit more.

For me right now a yellow gold sub and BLRO are the ones I’m going for. Not so much a age thing but goals that once I achieve in myself and my business I will purchase them. I’m preparing for judgement or comments once I start rocking them. But Each time I put them on it shows that hard works and goals is what life is about.

I disagree Completely, I am 6 ft tall White male, very slender with small-ISH wrists and I have a two tone- GMT Master II Tigerauge - Pre-Ceramic on a two-tone Jubilee Bracelet 18K solid gold and SS. with the black dial, i almost consider this watch a modern piece, I wear it pretty much everyday (work in office). AND I LOVE IT, I get plenty of completemnts on it as well from old and young people, I do think a NON-Sporty Rolex will seem a bit old fashioned such as a Day-date or Date Just. So if you are young and want to show some gold make sure you go sporty for example: GMT Master II, Submariner, Yatch-Master and the Daytona

There is no restrictions, I think it all boils down to perceptions. I grew up looking at old men wearing a day date with the president bracelet. Does that means that’s something to abide to ? No ...maybe in another part of the world 20 year olds are wearing the president watch and therefore perceived as a watch for the young.

For me personally, I sold my DD40 because it was a little out of my comfort zone as far as maturity and style.
It worked really well for me as a special occasion watch, but it was a bit too much money to tie up in a watch that was worn sparingly. Don't get my wrong, I think it's about as close to perfect as a watch can get, just not casual enough for my style and lifestyle. |

It's 2017. Class hardly exists anymore (unfortunately). Terrible life choices are justified with "YOLO". Acting like a 10 year old in your 50s is widely accepted. Millions of people look up to low class trashy celebrities. At this point, I'd say anything is acceptable and age appropriate. True humility and class are dying at warp speed. Social media has accelerated this trend rapidly. People will do anything for attention from random people. I wouldn't blink twice at a 16 year old wearing a solid gold rolex with diamonds. I have my own opinions about class and acting appropriate, but I find fewer and fewer people who even understand what I'm talking about. Wear whatever you want!

they still have a touch of “I know it may be old fashion but.....” or “ I don’t care if it’s perceived as an old mans watch” :) Love the thought processes and the diversity! Keep ‘em coming |

My tastes change over time, but not sure I connect that to my age or thinking about what is age appropriate, more so what I like.
Self admitted I have a loud personality and tend to be a bit flashy so flashy would not exclude watches for me LOL. I have been "collecting" for 30 years and gone through several phases--modern, YG, sport, vintage, back to modern. Currently have a small mix (114060, 16570 Polar, 116613LB, 116231) that suits my current needs and taste. I "grew" up in the 80's so TT and YG are cool with me. I can see how some younger folks may view these as 80's watches and be put off by that. On the contrary, I like that.....Through all of these changes the 16613LB/116613LB have been part of the mix the most. So in some ways i guess that is age appropriate but not consciously thought out. More an example that I just like the TT LB and Subs in general. By far had more Subs over the years than all the other watches combined.

How you act, look, feel and carry yourself is what is relevant. I've seen young guys rocking TT watches and old guys rocking colourful sports watches. Class is ageless and "style" is much more of an individual choice than it was in years past.

I don't think it depends on the watch itself but on the setting that the watch is in and even outfit. It's obvious that certain models are sought out for by different generations but every watch is interchangeable with people, its just how you choose to wear it.

I'm 35 and had a revelation about the jubilee bracelet somewhat recently.
I think fluted bezel and jubilee is for slightly older guys, but I think I'm pulling it off. Or at least I hope I am. Even if I'm not, I love it. |
