I have a funny question

Hello friends,

have a funny question and what does "oyster perpetual" actually mean?
I wondered all the time why this name is used.

Thanks and regards

Oyster - water resistant.

Perpetual - automatic winding movement.

Oyster is a refferal to the Oyster case. The Oyster was the first successful waterproof case for a wristwatch, patented by Rolex in 1926.

The Perpetual part is the Oyster combined with an automatic winding mechanism that was wound by the wrist motion of the wearer.

In which direction?

Rolex was one of the early innovators of self winding mechanisms as well. Famous for both water proof and self winding.

It’s Rolex own marketing way of saying their watch is waterproof & automatic.

To appreciate this you need to go back on history that
wayback early 1950’s having a waterproof watch is a big deal/milestone on horology. Companies (blancpain, rolex) are on the race to develop a waterproof watch.

Best regards,

I think some might debate that statement.

That is a good question to ask someone with a Rolex to know if he is into watches or just a status symbol. It was one of the first things I googled after getting my first Rolex.

It means
Oyster - water resistant.
Perpetual - automatic winding movement. So we can say it's a water resistant automatic winding movement watch.
