My wife fell for a scam...

She got a text on her phone saying they were from our bank and asking her to call the bank regarding a $2500 withdrawal from her account. She called and they got her to issue a new pin number and basically used that to wire $2500 out of our account. She quickly realized something didn't seem right afterward so she went down to the bank to try to stop it. Money came out of our account but she filed a claim to get it back. I'm not sure we will get that money back though.

GRRR... I'm so angry right now.

Always make sure you call your bank from a phone number on your bills etc, never from the one provided.

I told her that. I'm surprised she fell for it quite frankly. All this happened while I was at home too and she never mentioned anything to me while it was going on. I was in the garage with my son, he was washing one of our cars and I was just puttering around in the garage.

That Sucks! Scammers are getting very good using technology to get into accounts.

Changing your pins and passwords frequently will help. Be Very careful clicking on links you get from any email. If you get ANYTHING from a bank or financial institution Call them directly.

I hope this works out and you get your money back!

Julian, what is your bank saying? My Dad fell for a scam via his computer several weeks ago and everything worked out okay for him. Hopefully they can reverse things. Call your local PD and well as your states AG office so that they can do a report, your bank might require this before they can proceed. They should have a department just for this.

They're saying it will take up to 10 days to resolve and we should get the money back. I remain skeptical. Until that money is back in our account anyway.

Putting 2+2 together, so these 'scammers' phoned and requested a new pin number so they could access/extract funds from your bank account at a later timeframe (albeit shortly)? How did they get your account info to begin with? Could it have been based on the regular use of a checking account/debit card while shopping?

Lastly, was their call-back number the same as one of the bank's Customer Service lines? Probably not.

Sorry to hear that and I hope you get your money back. Never trust a text message, as I don't believe a bank would contact you that way. I receive spam texts almost on a daily basis, grrr!

If it was that easy I would be unhappy with the bank procedures...they KNOW there are scams abound and there should have been more layers of security to that transaction. Sorry to hear.

you should get it back.

Thats 100% the reason i use credit cards for everything (well the points and miles are nice too). Wouldn't help in your situation but when someone steals your info, and ive had it happen a few times, its not your money thats gone while they are sorting it.

I always warn my wife (and myself) to be wary of answering calls and texts from numbers you don't recognize. Last time I happened to pick up a call to our home phone, it was a recorded message claiming to be calling from one of our banks about fraudulent activity, and that I should enter the last 4 of my social security number to verify my identity. I just laughed, hung up and ignored the followup phone calls. Went online and checked my accounts.....no suspicious activity.

Always funny when you get called and asked to verify who you are. You called me, remember, I should be vetting you, Prince of Nigeria.

I literally had $2200 scammed on my CC last week.. Hope you get a quick resolution.
My CC company was great, zero liability, money returned in under 24hrs.

My Chase Marriott card number was hacked for the third time in the last 2 years. They text and ask if the charges were us. If you respond no they freeze the cards immediately and tell you to call the number on the back. Very common this time of year as the scammers use to buy gift cards as a lot of them are sold during the holidays.

Was minor this time. $500 of stuff at gas stations. But a pain in the ass as we have to now, once again, switch everything that is auto bill.

Damn... I'm so sorry this happened and really hope you're able to recover that money somehow. These low life scumbags seem to be trying harder and harder with this type of crap. It's often in the news and they're constantly trying new methods. It's scary and I hope they're caught.

Sorry to hear...and hope it’s resolved within the next week or so.

With the Equifax breach, more than CC numbers were exposed. Bank account data was also siphoned. So when the buyers of that data notice certain banks, they can shape their approach to achieve the best results.

Telephone scams don't worry me too much but I do worry about all the personal information stored on my computer.

Ive had chase cards compromised 3 times too. One time it was a card I had never even used before. So basically that told me the compromise is on their end not anything i did.

In any case its their money that was gone, not mine, so its doesn't really bother me while they sort it out as im not liable anyway.

banks love fees they never call you to tell you something before it happens. if it is a fraud alert the worst that will happen is they freeze your account until you clear it.

sorry for the mistake she made but it happens.

Definitely not her fault, as she was trying to protect your accounts.

Sounded like a legit call.

I hope the catch the guy and rip his balls off!
