What area to stay when visiting NYC with family?

Hey everyone, I know that there are quite a few members here who live in NYC or surrounding areas, so I pose the question. I am planning to take my young family to NYC just after New Years, possibly that week for a few days just to do something and change the air so to speak. I am looking at hotels but am not quite sure what area to stay in, I dont plan on renting a car either if that helps. It would be my wife and I and our kids 10 and 8. Thanks everyone!

I suggest Midtown, near the theater district. There's at least the following hotels there:
The Marriott Marquis
The Hilton
(both too big for me, but in the heart of the theater district)
The Millennium Broadway
The Algonquin
The Iriquois
(each smaller and more my speed)
The Palace
The St. Regis

It all depends on your price point - none are cheap; NYC is not a cheap place unless you know the city real well.

I agree with the above. Don't get suckered into a small hotel or air bob on The outskirts of Manhattan saying it's only a 5 minute subway ride to the city. I work in a area of Brooklyn as a cop and a tourist can be spotted a mile away. It's appealing cause the prices are much lower but not a good idea. PM me if you have a specific question

Chelsea is nice. That would be my choice. There’s a ton of options for hotels in nyc.

The Parker Meridian is an excellent choice because it has a rooftop pool!!
Very kid friendly.

Agree with The Lotte Palace as a great pick too. Stay there frequently

I also have enjoyed The Quin as of late

Nic, My family always prefers the hotels located along central park south (W59th). The Plaza, Park Lane, Ritz Carlton or The Marriott Essex House. Spring for a park view about 20 storey up and the family will love it. Great access to the park and walking distance to a lot of other attractions. Lots of other transportation options if the kids get tired and you don't want to walk anymore including relatively cheap cab ride back to the hotel.

I stayed at The Marriott Marquis for a basketball game at the Barkley Center in Brooklyn, not only was it nice, although kinda big, it was right in the middle of everything. 2-3 minute subway walk, lots of resturants. You can get to a to any where you want from that location.

Personally Next time I'll stay in Gramacy Park area as I like the hotel and park

I like the Grand Hyatt By Grand Central Station.

Stayed there numerous times, and always left with good things to say, plus, can’t beat the location either. Most recent stay was over 4th of July.

The NoMad hotel is my favorite current place.

Midtown to the Park is too touristy for my taste.

We stayed at the Ramada east side. Not 5 star by any means, but a close walking distance to Empire state building. I walked out onto the fire escape stairs on the outside of building and snapped some great shots of E.S.B.

If money is absolutely no object, The Plaza hotel on the south end of Central park. The Beatles and many other celebs have stayed there. Absolutely beautiful to just walk into it and look around if you can't stay there. Awesome.

Good advice. To truly experience Manhattan, you need to stay in Manhattan.

I took my 4 y/o daughter for a long weekend this past spring and we stayed at 1 Hotel Central Park. It's a block away from Central Park and the subway is a block or so away as well. It was a nice quiet hotel and unbelievably reasonable around $300/night when we stayed. I highly recommend it.
