Expensive Watches & the Folks Who Wear Them

Curious if any of you encountered this watch-related article awhile back (2013) and follow-up blog response. The topic/rant is debatable to a certain extent and obviously not applicable to everyone who shares an avid interest in high-end (aka expensive) timepieces. On the other hand, this distasteful stereotype described at length by the first author (Nolan) is definitely out there and chances are, we have all crossed paths with a few of these cretins somewhere along the way.

The first article was written by a lower class dude with resentment issues. Haven't read the other article yet.

What a freakin moron to write something like that. I’ve seen that attitude by people who wear a Nixon. Not too many high end watch owners talk about their watches with people that don’t love watches.

They're not completely wrong. Impossible to say how strong it is, but I'm sure there's a positive correlation between being a jerk and wearing a luxury watch.

Strapping on a Richard Mille (or any other high priced brand) is not an aggressive act in itself. But if it facilitates a feeling of superiority, then the wearer may feel entitled to act rudely or aggressively

Seriously!! I saved for a long time to buy my Rolex's over many years. It was a goal. I don't know what's stopping this guy from making payments to himself to pick up a nice watch. What a hoser!

There's some evidence that drivers in luxury cars are more likely to break traffic rules. Not sure if any formal study has been done about luxury watches

Basically Just a very angry writer who really can`t afford a high end watch, & become highly successful within there chosen career or business. So has become extremely bitter & Jealous of all who have worked very hard to succeed in life...

Well OK there are others that have just had it all handed to them on a plate and never done a day`s work in there lives so far.. But that`s another story....

This opinion is tired... I have been into watches since being a youth, when I made my first money the first thing I bought was a watch. Watches I own today is just in my opinion a natural progression.

If the rule broken is the one that says you're a jerk if you drive slow in the hammer lane and refuse to give way to faster traffic, then I think you're on to something.

I actually did meet someone who gave me almost a word for word quote from that first article. Saw my Submariner almost 15 years ago and said “hey that’s a great watch I got he same one at home. I have had 3 though but I keep losing them. Who cares right!? If I lose this one I’ll jist buy another one”

He was an asshole but he was also a liar. I doubt he had a sub at home and I doubt he owned and lost two before it.

Interesting article with broad generalizations of owners of certain items. Like everything, people are entitled to an opinion but when you paint with too broad a brush you lose the point.

There will always be people who fit stereotypes, but correlation does not equate to causation. Simply stated, if you’re an a-hole without a watch you will still be an a-hole with a watch. The moral to the story is don’t be an a-hole!

In the U.K. amazingly we have and had upper class dudes with this attitude, due to their political leanings. There are of course some in the Houses of Parliament now!
