December in Mexico

Mexico is unique. A country of traditions, of families, flavors and colors. A unique place indeed.

Mexico is +97% catholic but, as it has been said many times, it is even more Mariano. This means that Virgin Mary plays a very important place in our religious beliefs (I am not trying to make this post religious, as I am a firm believer in mutual respect no matter what religion or beliefs we all have, just trying to share a background).

Because of this, the Basilica of Guadalupe receives over 20 million visitors per year, and about 45% of those happen from Dec 1 to Dec 12 -date when we celebrate her-

Our Basilica is smaller than Mexico City’s; so visitors are just around 5 million. Yes, December is HER month, and with it comes a beautiful tradition.

Let me take my TRF family with me....

December in Mexico

We have two Basilicas here, the original (image from construction date...yes, 1895) and the recent (late 1980’s) built a few feet away...

December is here, so paying respect to Her is very important. However, with hundreds of thousands visiting, finding a parking spot requires more than a miracle!

For several years now, we rent a small bus to drive us there and pick everyone up a few hours later. Time to leave...

Upon arrival, we find as every year an ocean of people. Attending mass is a tradition (we are lucky to find a sitting spot). I will not share images from inside -with thousands of flowers as presents to Her- as a sign of respect. Outside, candles, prayers and people everywhere.

Ah, so much fun!! We were thinking about flying down there for a couple of days over the Christmas holiday to relax and get warmed up!

December in Mexico

We continue walking and find a small place to sit down. Dinner: enchiladas! The REAL ones.

After a few hours of magnificent street food, craft shopping and just walking around, it is time to go back. People still light candles and place them next to Her image...newer are outside while fully consumed ones are left as a statement of our beliefs and traditions. This ceremony will continue for days.

Back after a fun afternoon with our families, time to just relax and have a fantastic evening. We do need something after all that food

Thank you TRF for riding along one of our most beautiful traditions. Finally back home. After a hot shower, time to go to bed. Hasta mañana.

As all countries, we have bright and gray things; but culture, history, traditions and FOOD are unique!

I'm going to be in Cozumel around the 7-9. Not going to anything religious, just a short cruise with the wife for our anniversary. Can't wait. Never been. Love the pics.

It is a beautiful island! I would stay away from tourist-y attractions and do local things (ok, visit to Rolex AD a must!). If you need ideas, please PM anytime.
