Any Grand Cherokee owners out there......

Ive been driving a Toyota Tundra as my DD for about 8 months now. I'm tired of it and ready to move on. Not looking for anything real expensive as its my DD and I have a "fun/weekend" car. I'm looking at the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but not the real expensive models. Anybody have/have had one or any experience or thoughts to share.... thanks boys!!

I had a 97 & 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I had good luck with both of them. Great vehicle for the money.

I have a 2014 Overland edition, currently have 120k miles. Love it big time, however I am very happy I got the lifetime warranty because between recalls and warranty repairs it has been in shop I think 10-12 times and I need to get in for new recall item.

Now that said I would buy again, this is our second JGC, I gave our first to son to use at college with 200,000+ miles and still going strong.

If your heavy into 4 wheeling you may want to look at other Jeeps.

My wife drives a 16 GC Overland and really likes it. Not any problems so far, but she isn't too hard on it.

I have been driving Jeep Grand cherokees as rental vehicles the last two months each week. I know they are rentals but one with 25K miles drove and the interior looked as worn as a 10 year old vehicle might. Christmas week I got one with 500 miles on it that I drove to NY and back to SC. It seemed pretty nice but was basically brand new. I have never owned one like other members here but most reliability reports don’t rate them highly. You might look at Forerunners since you are already familiar with Toyota vehicles.

Have you considered a 4-Runner or Highlander? Resale on Jeeps can be tough.

I have owned a 2017 GC Altitude for about 6 months now and like it a lot. I wanted n F-150 Lariat, but just couldn’t justify the high price in my mind. I got the extended warranty and if I don’t use it, I can get the money back at any time. It has a lot of bells and whistles that usually are only on vehicles in a higher price range. 300 horsepower 4x4 and it is averaging 23mpg.

We had a 07 grand Cherokee Laredo. Great vehicle. Drove it until we outgrew it without incident. In my opinion, can’t go wrong.

I had a 1995 Grand Cherokee...made it about 95,000 miles and was having issues, electronics and transmission.

I now have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland edition. Just about to hit 80,000 miles and it's been relatively trouble-free.

I like them a lot.

Once you hit 60k miles, expect trouble. However, sounds like you and I have a similar disease. So my guess is you won’t make it to half that.

Fwiw, if I were going jeep again, I’d get a wrangler.

Wife drives a 2017 Trailhawk with the Hemi. Fun car to drive and has some space. At 20k starting to have some issues already. The carpet wore thru in one spot and FCA refused to cover. Last couple days the “service air suspension immediately” light keeps coming on. Not sure what that is about.

Fun to drive. Nice features. Typical Chrysler.

Nice thing is the less expensive ones don’t have a lot of the bells and whistles which is what breaks most of the time.

I had a 2015 Altitude edition. It was nice, but boring and tons of little electrical things going on. I traded it in for a new Wrangler unlimited. Love the Wrangler.

Don’t do it. I had a 14 summit they bought back because it was a lemon. I got a 15 summit and it sucked too. There are some Jeep forums. You will see they have a lot of issues. I will never own a Chrysler product again. I have had 7 and 3 of those were POS. You a lot of options for the money because their quality control is the worst.

Currently have two. A ‘14 Summit and an ‘18 SRT. Just sold an ‘04 I loved but wanted newer safety related technology. Overall, we like them as winter vehicles in New England and they’re American made. Have had some recalls with the ‘14 and that’s a pain but covered. We typically buy all the long term warranty stuff for peace of mind. We've had decent luck with them. But we also take care of them. Good luck on your decision.

Several years ago I looked at all of the mid-sized and full sized suvs. Ultimately I went full sized and after 5 years I've concluded that I don't really need a full sized land barge. So i've been looking again recently at the mid-sized suvs. The advantage of the Grand Cherokee is that it offers all the safety bells and whistles that the big boys have for significantly less money. The downside is that it is on the smaller side in terms of cargo space, though I think I can make it work for my needs. I looked at the forerunner as it is one of the last dinosaur body on frame designs in the mid-sized range, but it doesn't offer any of the modern bells an whistles and it shows that it's designed as a real off-road capable vehicle. You'd think they'd go all in and make it a wrangler like all business set up with removable carpets, etc. but they're keeping it as a dated hybrid design. It will be interesting to see what direction they go when they finally redesign it.
Fortunately I got the "hey look at me" out of my system early, so unless Mercedes, Audi, etc. offers something significantly better, I don't need a trophy car as my daily driver and beach house hauler for my dogs and kids to jack up.
At the moment the finalists are a loaded Grand Cherokee of some kind, perhaps the V8 Trailhawk, or a larger but also more expensive Lexus GX. There is a large discount on the GC as well which is nice.
One other thing to add about the jeep. There were a lot of electrical problems which plagued recent models, but from what I've researched they made some change to the CPU in 2015, so the new ones should perform better and the previous reliability concerns are probably one of the drivers for the more modest pricing. And when the new remodel comes out in a few years time it's going to be an Alfa product. That doesn't fill me with confidence. I just wish it was about 3 inches longer in the trunk space

You have almost no chance of problems with a Lexus, or, whatever the roll of the dice gives you with the Fiat/Chrysler product. You will spend less on the Jeep, but you will get what you pay for.

Oops, meant Fiat. Lol.
I don’t keep them forever, so I’m not too worried. After 7 years and 100k miles, it looks like depreciation is the same in terms of cost of ownership. I’d pony up for the extended warranty though to hedge my bet.
Maybe I’ll just wait and roll the dice on a Bollinger.

Ha ha. Yes I'm pretty bad with the car flippping, not as bad as watches tho. One piece I forgot to mention is that id be passing this down to my daughter in two years as the last car id be buying for her. She'd be in her second year of college and hopefully done backing into things and hitting poles. There are mixed opinions as to long term problems. I'm picking up one tomorrow to drive for a couple of days. We shall see.....

Not to derail this thread at all... but yesterday I saw the real deal - a Jeep Wagoneer with the fake wood paneling. Such a classic, still even to this day. Photo is courtesy of Google images. Also hear these have shot up in value.

Probably owned at least 8 GC's over the last 30 years one of my favorite vehicles they go great in the snow and on the beach and in my opinion a very attractive design I've never had any problems but I know some folks have after all its American made

We've got a 2011 Durango. Basically the same vehicle, but longer and 3 rows. I love the way it drives. And for it's size, it gets decent mileage. The newer models with the 8 Speed are even better. Definitely plan on upgrading to a newer model. Hopefully with a Hemi.

I'd go the Toyota/Lexus route. Far better resale and long term durability.
