Where does haute horology begin?
So by definition, horology includes any complication beyond a two hander whereas haute horology is watchmaking in its highest form, with the emphasis on the movement technology rather than the case (cartier for example), bracelet (AP for example) or dial (Lange 1 for example).
I have been interested in watches and collecting them mainly based on their design but am becoming more interested in the idea of haute horology and movements that are really pushing the limits. The ultra thin movement race interests me but in terms of complication or extreme movement technology is something like the JLC MUT perpetual calendar the entry point? What other interesting movement technology and complication is out there that is attainable pre-owned for under $20k? What do you consider counting as haute horology rather than watch design (interesting case, dial, etc). |

This is the definition of horology.
Definition of horologyHaute horlogerie is a far more vague term. https://www.google.com/search?client...w=1113&bih=568You might find this to be a reasonable explanation.

The meaning is vague but for me it’s the movement, the decoration and the history.

I think when something transcends engineering and heads into the artistic.

My thought is that I want something that has a lot of effort and skill invested in the movement, beyond finishing, which I think is more relevant to appearance. |

To me, haute horology is when design and aesthetics are just as important as functionality.

Very few toubillon dials appeal to me although the engineering is impressive. |

Depends who you ask
For me it starts as low as GO, JLC, Nomos even. Price is less important to me but rather the attention to detail. Frankly I feel its a dumb term and can be thrown in the trash. Makes one sound like a total d bag just saying it.
