Please help me authenticate this GMT Master

A buddy of mine was given this watch...he isn't a watch guy so he's looking to move it. No original box, but it does have the Rolex Service Box. I only have this one picture available right now.

Does anyone see anything that jumps out at them? Also hoping to get some clarity on what year it is from? Assuming it is authentic I would also like to know what price I should offer. Thanks so much for your help!

His father gave it to him as a college graduation gift. He told me he was given the watch by a co-worker over 20 years ago and that there is an inscription on the back. His dad was aware that he has other interests and hobbies, so he told him to feel free to offload the watch to fund these other passions. Thanks again!

Seems easier just to take it into an Indy or Rolex dealer to have it authenticated?

I was definitely planning on doing this as well. Just hoping to get some eyeballs on it first to see if anything looked out of place. Also very curious as to which reference it might be.

If he's your buddy he certainly won't mind having it authenticated by a real person who knows what they're doing going through the real watch and, if it is indeed authentic, what needs fixing (if anything).

Until that's done, there's no point in asking random strangers online about value or what should be offered because the potential price if it is or loss if it isn't is far too high to not to. As Speed says, they aren't given away like ball point pens.

As far as year, once the bracelet is removed there is a long (in the millions) serial number between the lugs and you can find charts online showing the best guess as to when it was manufactured. The other 5-digit number (as will be the case with this watch) between the other lugs is the model.

Looks good to me.... Plots seem to have aged to a nice patina. Dial looks right etc.

Oh and as far as price. Question would be what is the reference and serial number (don't post serial number here) to know the age etc. Is watch in working order?

It is running, but I'm not sure how accurate the time it's keeping is. It hasn't been serviced in 4 or 5 years, but also hasn't been worn much at all in that time period. Thank you!

Just by the picture, you can be absolutely sure the date-keeping is wonky and needs fixing. It's almost 14 hrs past when it should have changed over cleanly so something inside is amiss.

As a starting point, the reference you're looking for is an early-mid '80s 16750 with a glossy/WG surround, "no date" dial (meaning under "Rolex" is says "Oyster Perpetual", not "Rolex Perpetual Date"). Whether that dial is real and/or originally came with the watch is undetermined (as is the entire watch until it's authenticated, inside and out...here is not the place to do it).

16750 mid 80's had the white gold surrounds on the dial. Could be earlier and that could be a service dial but won't know for sure without seeing the reference - serial number etc.

Majority of fakes don't have the correct handstack. Can't tell from the picture. If the handstack is ok then the question is whether any aftermarket parts fitted that give it a replica look

Needs to be taken apart i.e. Bracelet removed, mechanism inspected, to truly authenticate. Gladiator is the guy who knows all on this, had a recent similar experience and he helped me out! Either that or take to an AD to inspect/authenticate.

Dont need to see the movement, its a genuine 16750 caliber
