Dial size versus watch case size

I tried to look this up from past posts but didn’t find an answer is it true that the dial size of the DD2 and the dial size of the DD40 Are actually the same exact size?

In other words interchangeable with each other’s cases?

So the 39 mm Rolex DD masterpieces are probably the same size dial as the 36Day date but just with the 39 mm case?

Which model are you referring to when you say the 39mm DD? The only one close is the DD40. But you already mentioned it in your first paragraph. So it looks like you’re asking about 4 different sized DDs?

I don’t know about the DD2 and DD40 dials, but my guess is that they’re not exactly the same, and no they wouldn’t be interchangeable.

I also think the very best DD2 dials, lends themselves really well to the DD2 cases. While it’s not really my favorite watch, I think the DD2 dials are some of the coolest Rolex has ever made. That said, I don’t think they’d have the same appeal in the thinner, smaller and more refined DD40 case.

I can say for certain, but the case sizes are about 1.5mm difference, so I wouldn’t think they’d be interchangeable. I know the DJ2 dials will not fit the current DJ41’s.

Much appreciated. I agree about the cool wave and concentric dials for the DD2 but thought I had read here that the dial size was actually the same.

The Rolex “Masterpiece Day Date” was a 39 mm watch with a special 5 link bracelet. The were discontinued a while back but you can search the forum for lucky owners. They had diamond bezels. The successor to this one was the “pearlmaster” but it’s currently really a ladies watch.

Just looked it up. That’s cool. I’ve seen those before but never knew they were 39mm. Interesting. Thanks.

I know the 39mm Explorer dial is larger than those of the 40mm GMTs, Subs, etc.

I agree. Beautiful but expensive. They have diamonds on them and the masterpiece bracelet. Cool thing is there was never a glacier blue wave dial for the DD2 but there is a 39mm masterpiece with glacier blue wave dial.

But I always wondered if it really was the same dial size as the 36mm and the bigger case and bling is why it’s listed as 39mm.

Yes, there are a lucky few here who own them.

Haha I actually really don’t care for them. I share your enthusiasm in the model simply cause I find it interesting when Rolex makes these random short run watches in low numbers.

Otherwise, I don’t find the bracelet to be attractive and diomonds just aren’t my thing. I do really like the glacier dials, so again my you’ve piqued my interest.

Yeah, the 40mm GMT/SubDates/Exp II shared a dial size with the 36mm DD/DJ/Exp.
