Sub mystery

I purchased a 16613 new back in 1996. The serial number on the case matches the papers BUT the serial number is in the mid 4M range with no letters. According to Rolex a 4M serial number would have been produced in the mid 70s a full 10 years before the 16613 was introduced. What's going on?

Interesting. Pics of case and possibly inside the watch?

Service replacement case possibly. I think they were 4.4-4.7 mil serial if I recall.

I think we need more of the serial number from the OP, at least the first 3 digits

Maybe Rolex misplaced that 4M serial case way back then
found it and used it on a newer model ... At the factory of course...
Since the case itself for SS and TT Subs are 40mm and all SS
they figured it would work as long as the original Rolex design
16613 was stamped onto the case when assembling the TT Sub.
Just thinking out loud

The SN is 4,41X,XXX on the watch and corresponds to the SN on the papers (which I still have). It was bought new in 96.
