Pepsi GMT MASTER —- evaluation

I am looking at this Pepsi GMT Master. It was recently serviced by an authorized dealer and dates from 1970. Currently it is on a generic strap.

Is this a rare and hard to find watch?
Does the condition of this watch (scratches and dings apparent on the case) significantly affect its value?

It runs within COS specifications.

I am not selling this watch... but thinking of purchasing it

Case is in terrible condition. It would have to be really cheap then you could send it to LAWW for a refinish.

Any chance of a serial number as I would say it is earlier or a mismatch of parts!

Probably 1.6-1.7m serial. Value is probably more affected by the dial condition. Hard to say exact value but somewhere 7-8k something.

Yeah, I don't disagree with this but before pulling the trigger try and get some more high qual pics (esp. of the serial)... if its an early matte 1675, and it probably is, and that small GMT is original its a nice plus.

If you do end up buying it, make sure you send it to someone who works with vintage as a core competency, like LAWW, for the case work. In the wrong hands that job could be disastrous.

That spotty dial would never stop bothering me.

Thanks!!!
I thought the case looked beaten up.
Would the dial need work? Or does it make sense to leave it as is?

The watch has a Mark I dial which was used up the high 2 million serial range. Case back dates on the high end of the serial number range should be 1971. Based on it having the small 24-hour hand, and if original, I would place the serial number in the high 1.6-1.7 million serial number range with a late 66 or 67 case back.

The dial is average to below average condition, the hands are in poor condition as well as the case. The insert is much later as well as it missing a bracelet. Be prepared to spend a few thousand dollars if you are looking to restore the watch and make it period correct.
