Vegas inventory

As I sit at the office, after a quick trip (you saw the thread), something happened that I think needs to be addressed:

I flew from Vegas to Mexico City (had appointments for one of our companies) so I left from Terminal 3 (https://www.mccarran.com/Terminals/T3) which was built with international flights in mind, so their duty free stores are...B I G

As I waited for my flight, purchasing a bottle or two of my favorite drink sounded like a good idea. To my surprise, scotch inventory was...TERRIBLE! NO Chivas 18; NO Balvenie (only 30 yr+), NO Glenfiddich (only 25 yr+) First time I have seen this!

I asked, the answer was simple: sir: The Super Bowl was two days ago.

...looks like it is easier to find a professional line Rolex than a bottle of single malt

Having been to Vegas 8 times (9th next month) I’ve always found the terminal very disappointing as there’s never been anything there. However in the last few years they’ve expanded it and there’s a range of shops now - previously there was a small duty free shop, a golf shop and a couple of poor cafes selling Pizza Hut and Burger King. Now it’s quite nice.

I have friends at a few places locally (some close to the strip, some not so much) that could help fill most whisky drinkers hearts desires, but sadly, not duty free.

Additionally, scotch distilleries are not so much scaling back production as they are repositioning products. More non age statement is hitting the market, and occupying a certain price point, as the intent is to send the age statement whisky up market. Consumers associate age with quality, and Diageo, LVMH and the like see an opportunity accordingly. This is what friends in the industry have advised (I started getting UPSET when some beloved age statements started getting replaced with NAS....)

Vegas inventory

I never knew a flight from Vegas to Minneapolis was considered International
How else could a duty free shop in LV could be affected by Super Bowl?

Also, they had no way to anticipate/predict that demand for the older age statement products would go thru the roof. The distilleries have ramped up production, but it takes time for that increased volume to actually hit the market. You don't just say "hey, let's make more Macallan 18 year", and it shows up on shelves in a year or two (unless you have a time machine, and go back in time to put way more product in casks).

People go TO Vegas to watch/bet on the Superbowl. It's one of their biggest weekends after New Years and the rodeo (I think it's in early December).

Ah so, I did not expect that - International travel to bet at Vegas sports books.
