Icon5 Submariner or Yachtmaster?

Hey everyone!

After getting my Datejust II 116300 and GMT Master Coke 16170, I am planning my next piece.

I am really digging the look/features of the Yachtmaster (not the Yachtmaster II, as it’s out of my price range), but I also crave the Submariner. I love the look of the YM1 (Silver on silver version, but the blue looks amazing too), polished center links, dressy or casual……. but also, how can anyone not love a good clean sub (date). The sub is obviously a must in anyones collection I feel, but just unsure which one to plan for. I plan on trying them both on, if I can find an AD that has them both.

I bought my DJ2 brand new and obviously my GMT Coke used, but in amazing condition……..so I am more than likely going pre owned at this point.

For those that have both….which one do you prefer? Anyone else, please weight in!

Thanks!

Have the 16610 and 16622. Sub is a bit more casual, YM is more elegant. Really depends on what you are going for, but both are very comfortable to wear and are classic Rolex design. Good luck!

I own and love the PL YM. it’s stunning. Have also a BLNR but must confess I’ve no desire for a sub. The BLNR satisfies my need for a cool tool watch and it has the amazingly elegant and useful GMT complication.

Thanks for the feedback.

I need to see them both in person....but does the YM look more clustered? Weird question..... I know. The larger markers and bezel look a bit think compared to the sub. Thoughts? Thanks!

Blue pill: Submariner, like everybody else. You tell yourself "if everybody wants one, it must be good".

Red pill: Yacht-Master, the connoisseur's choice. A refined version of its sibling that tranports you to a world of sublime and understated elegance. The beauty of the dial, the bezel insert, the curved and stylish lugs, the polished case, the amazing super smooth bi-directional bezel.

You've got to see for yourself.

Both have maxi dials and the bezel is the same size. It appears larger on the YM because the insert and the outer ring have a similar colour.

This is one that's going to come down to personal preference I think (rather than which is a better addition given your current collection). I think the two primary deciding factors are the bezel and dial color. I personally have never been a fan of the aesthetics of the YM1 bezel. I wouldn't let the popularity of the sub and "uniqueness" of the YM1 influence your decision...pick the watch you like more because both of them would make a great addition to your collection.

Platinum yachmaster of course!
The dial is unreal (and solid Platinum, if you didn't know)

Yep! Only you can decide, OP. Because my feelings are the opposite. I think in your case it’s really important to see and try on each. Your gut will tell you very quickly which one. And then perhaps you can save up for the other if it’s a close decision.

It's one or the other in my opinion. If you have a GMT a Sub is kind of similar so you buy a Yachty. Can't really go wrong get what you like best after a try on. Some people really hate the Yachty! Perhaps you should be aware.

If you haven’t seen the Yachtmaster in person, you should before making the decision. Imo, that watch always looks better than most photographs make it appear. I personally prefer the sub, but that yachtmaster is impressive in person. The dial is excellent!

Submariner or Yachtmaster?

I'm not a fan of subs. They seem boring to me and everyone and his dog has one. Yes they are popular but just not for me. I guess I like the more eclectic look. I have a Z Blue and just bought a YM last week. I love the look of the YMs. Steel, TT, and on OF. They all look different. What's not to love.

I have owned both and prefer the Submariner. I like the bezel better and prefer the tool watch fell of the Submariner.

I had a 16610, a 16622 and now 116610. From experience I can tell you, YMs are nice but IMO they don't age well, Platinum bezel and pcls look horrible with heavy use like I had mine, resale value is crappy, but size and fit are amazing. Given that you already own a DJ, I say you don't need another dressy piece, you need a sub!

I wouldn't say the YM was a mistake for me but I'm back on team sub and happier than I ever was with the YM.

I think its funny how whenever there was a YM thread you were all up in it and any chance you had to post up your YM you did. You touted it as the best thing in life since sliced bread and now your on the other side of the fence slagging on it.

Not really, when I had my YM I was very grateful to own it and I did my best on enjoying it, but as I learned more about watches and my taste evolved, I realized it wasn’t the watch for me so I went for a submariner. YM is a great watch but I’m picking the Submariner over it, maybe as a second watch I’ll own one in the future, but I must have a sub first.

he wears the blue face on the weekends,

Between the two, I'll go for a Yachtmaster blue dial. Sub are way too common.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Like I said, as well as many others in the thread, I need to try both on. I have tried the sub on and I liked it, but the AD's never never seem to have the YM in stock.
