Rolex attitude problems with my local baker

So, I went to my BD (Bread Dealer) to get a loaf of fresh baked bread. And boy am I steamed. I just can't believe the treatment I got. But before I get to that, a little background:

***I love bread. In fact you might call me a BIS (Bread Idiot Savant).

***In addition to using bread for it's intended purpose - eating it - I also collect bread.

***I usually keep a few loaves in a bead warmer, not to eat, just so I can look at them and have a nice smell wafting through the house.

***My vintage loaves are mint safe queens. I store them in an oversized lock box at my bank.

***Most of my vintage models have the original receipt and bag I purchased them in. Trading loaves is always easier if you keep the receipt and the bag it came in.

***My grail loaf is a 1968 French baguette. The crust has flaked a little but it has an excellent patina. And it is 100% authentic.

***Try as she does, my spouse does not get my bread collecting hobby.

***When I travel, I like to stop in at local bakeries and look at their stock. Not to buy, just to see what's new. If I see something I like, I will ask for a free sample. I also ask if I can hold a loaf to see how it feels. Some BD's accommodate; some do not.

***If I do decided to purchase a loaf, I ask for a discount. Again, some BD's accommodate, some won't budge on the price. But no discount and I always walk. I mean, who pays MSRP for a loaf a bread? I also ask if they will forget the tax if I pay cash, I mean what's the harm? I and I always demand that they get a loaf from the rack in the back. Who wants bread that's been sitting in a case? Right?

But I digress.... There is only one old time bakery that does it right in the town where I work. Unfortunately, they have gotten popular and tend to sell out of the bread I want. So I got there bright and early, and guess what? They were once again sold out. That's right, no French Baguettes.

My BD tried to push some sourdough on me (they always have tons of sourdough). But I declined.

I explained to my BD that this was unacceptable. That the bakery was creating an artificial Baguette supply crisis. That they needed to make more French Baguettes so I could be assured of getting what I wanted, when I wanted it.

My BD told me that they were running at capacity and would have to buy another oven and hire more employees. I explained that he needed to do this so I could be assured of getting the loaf of bread I wanted, when I wanted it.

My BD acted like I was bonkers. However, he did offer to put me on a waiting list. A list for a Baguette? You've got to be kidding me!!! He also offered to hold a Baguette for me next Friday, if and only if I would buy a tart. But tarts' are expensive. And besides, why should I have to buy a tart, just to get a Baguette?

Is your bread dealer an authorized bread dealer (ABD) or are they re-selling bread they buy from third-parties?

As I suspected. My BD is to blame for the grey bread market.

I like the metaphor. It does make it a sound so silly! I posted a similar story s few days ago except from the AD’s perspective.

But say you have invested millions of your own money in a licensing agreement with a brand. Let’s say it’s to sell cookies.

And 8/10 customers who walk through the door want a chocolate chip cookie.

But wait, your franchisor has not provided you with any chocolate chips.

So you can offer your customers an oatmeal cookie. You have dozens of those. You even have a few very expensive rare macadamia nut cookies, for those who have refined tastes.

Each day that goes by you have to sit on trays of cookies that went stale. Everyone wanted chocolate chip. Sure a few bought a cup of coffee, maybe a bagel. One or two splurged for the macadamia nut. A few settled for a oatmeal (who actually likes oatmeal cookies anyways!?!)

But each night as you settle your register you think about how many chocolate cookies you could have sold. Sure, you met payroll and maybe even took down a profit. But you didn’t invest all of your money into a bakery not to be able to meet the needs of hungry chocolate loving people with a sweet tooth. It’s a HUGE missed opportunity. All because “corporate” didn’t give you any darn chocolate chips.

One of the most amazing facinating things of bread in my opinion is that they change color. So you never know exactly what to expect in the end.. It might be completely black for example after a few years. Mostly when they are complete green i sell or trade them in for newer version s as i don't like vintage .

My baker acts the same way.

A couple of days ago I went in to buy a baguette and immediately noticed it wasn't fresh.

I asked him when it was baked and he replied: yesterday.

I said I don't want old bread I want fresh.

He said, ah you want bread that is baked today?

Finally I thought to myself so of course I said yes.

He said: then you have to come back tomorrow.

You touch upon a good point - but more apt to the Boutiques that can only carry Rolex.

I don’t know of any regular AD that only carried Rolex. All the ones around here carry Jewelry, Omega, and other brands. In fact, even when supply was no issue, gross revenue from Rolex sales would be a fraction of overall sales.

But low supply has definitely pinched AD’s revenues. Remember when Rolex was forcibly pruning ADs for low volume? Supply was not an issue then - the recession was an issue as well as low demand overall.

This current situation may affect distribution strategy as some ADs could let their franchise lapse. If Rolex wants to go direct - i.e., vertically integrated - this is one way to nudge that strategy towards fulfillment.

Yes totally agree. However, carrying other brands and jewelry lines does not stop you as a business owner from feeling frustrated. Carrying Rolex is a major financial commitment. It requires obviously a lot of inventory but also a lot of real estate. Regardless, it costs money. I’d be pretty ticked if I invested all that money and was limited in my supply!

No offense, but I am pretty sure.

This GENERAL ROLEX section is inundated with posts on the concepts to which I refer.

I got to thinking about this because I do not see the same level of posts on these themes in sub forums about other brands.

Just substitute the hot model of the moment for Baguette. Or "My AD" for my Bread Dealer and the story should sound familiar.

So, yes, I am sure. It is intended as satire, or FOOD for THOUGHT.

If we have lost the ability to step back and look at our attitudes and posts about Rolex, about AD's, etc. I would find that regrettable.

Just my opinion.
