Diver vs GMT

I am new to Panerai. Still try to choose which model I will aim for next year purchase.
I am considering PAM24, but it seems it is not very popular. Far below the popularity of PAM88.
If I compare with Rolex Submariner vs GMT Master II, then majority people will choose Submariner. It keeps me wonder why the same thing do not happening at Panerai.
It seems that people prefer a specific model not because of the function, but more on the design.
Submariner owners are not necessary like to dive, while GMT owners are not necessary world travellers which need dual time function.
If that is the case, then I can understand that in term of design PAM88 is 'nicer' than PAM24.
But I cant understand why Rolex Submariner is more favourite than GMTII, as for me, in term of design, they are quite similiar.............
Totally confused.

What would "use" a watch for? You could throw a "Base" on your wrist and not complicate.... Some really like the simplicity factor of PAM dial. - you can't go wrong - personal preference is so vrey unique person to person...

The Rolex Submariner is an iconic watch that has been at the top of the tree for over 50 years, it isn't just sold as a 'dive' watch, it's sold as a rugged watch that can handle a bit of punishment, so it's not really worth talking about it as a dive watch against others, infact Rolex have the Sea-Dweller as its dive watch.

The Panerai models don't really have that much history, they're not iconic on their own, but the brand is, so with Panerai i think a lot of people look at the actual functions of the watch, so a GMT will be a lot more popular than a divers watch and of course the look of the panerai is a bit cleaner with the GMT without the dive bezel.

Ryan,
This is a good explanation.
I always think that GMT must be more functionable than diver. But can not understand the submariner popularity. History...... that is the answer!

Man, that is a good question and I think Ryan has nailed it as good as it's going to be nailed.

I guess for me from a looks standpoint the 88 looks more PANERAI than the 24. I will and do use the functionality of the 88 more than perhaps I would a 24.

Having said that I've not ruled out a 24 in the future--that comes from being a total mess about these watches.

The 88 is more popular than the 24? 24 and 243's never see the case and I have seen several 88's. I am not sure of the production numbers but am surprised by the statement.

88's do seem more abundant. Personally - I just love how the 88 looks and as Mike pointed out - for me the GMT function is important.
