OP 39 Blue- am I too old?

With your help, opinions, etc, I visited my local Rolex dealer yesterday and got a 214270 Explorer. I had the short hand model for a short while, and am really pleased with this watch. They had a used, very clean OP 39 in Blue. I had a Grape last year and liked it, for whatever reason I parted with it. I now feel though that the OP 39s may be too "youngish" for me. I am 66. What do you guys think, and if you have one and endorse it, if you feel like it, give your age, or if you think there is a particular demographic for this watch. I know it comes down to personal taste... and I kind of feel like I may finally arrived at a watch that I truly love in the 214270 Explore, maybe best to quit while ahead... thank you!

OP 39 Blue- am I too old?

I have it in blue, I love it. I wear a lot of blue and it fits right in... but, I'm less than half your age at 32

OPs are, if anything, more conservative watches. I don't think any of them would look odd on an older gentleman, regardless of dial color.

Agree with springer above. I think they look good on a conservative or slightly elder person...less frilly. I like them very much but have not found the right one yet.

There is no way you are too old for that dial, but the dial may be too flashy for your tastes. It was for mine (I'm in my 50s), so I have the rhodium now instead.

Your money, your decision.. Personally I think the watch is gorgeous and a great addition to your Explorer.

Come on man, a watch is not age related.

I think the rhodium is perhaps more mature and conservative...

not just dial color Neil, but also style and presentation of the watch. A guy I know has the nicest old 2 tone DJ, 36mm, blue dial... gorgeous to my eyes... though I am not the biggest fan of 2 tone... though that is subject to change!

I think the OP was directed to a younger audience, and that doesn't mean it is not a great watch and adaptable to an older dude. The OP is not all that crazy or wild, but it was considered quite a departure for Rolex, less "austere"- a source of criticism yet also a strength of theirs I guess...

I think age has no determination on an OP39 in blue.

If you dig it, buy it.

last year I got one in grape, a fantastic offer presented itself. It was actually pretty subtle, almost like black depending on lighting. Not sure now why we parted ways...

Don't see any age issue or reason for concern. The watch is beautifully proportioned and understated, and reflects a level of sophistication. An overly large, blingy, "look at me" watch intended for a night at the club might be more appropriate to question.

I think the AK and field watches are fair game for us. I find the AK appealing. Enjoy it!

I just heard from Rolex that as of today you have to show ID and if you're over 50 they won't sell it to you.

A 214270 and OP 39 Blue sounds like an amazing combo, regardless of age. A rhodium dial would be too similar to your Explorer. I am a big fan of the black and blue combo in watches, hence why I have a 114060 and DJ 41 blue. I actually think blue is a fairly conservative color when not paired with yellow gold.

you're right about size and bling, and maybe I'm off here, maybe it is more just plain simple taste and personality.

I dig blue and want something along that line. I am also reconsidering things now because I am so impressed with the 214270. I've owned quite a few watches and nothing seemed just right like this one does.

you know Graham Avenue? My uncle had a store there for years in the 50s, 60s. Now it's called Avenue of Puerto Rico...

Funny how I always associate the OP series, especially in grape or blue, an older generation's watch. Simple and understated, function over form type of a watch.

Too old?

I always saw the OP as a "mature" man's watch - free from all sophomoric pretentiousness of PM or Sports models.
