Is this forum mainly MODERN or also Vintage?

Hello,
Just curious as to the spread of MODERN ROLEX vs VINTAGE ROLEX.....

Personally I prefer modern peices.... I can't really see the value in paying big $$$$ for an older piece.

I have owned a few vintage pieces in my time.... 1680 white, 1680 red, 1655 explorer II, prince, snowflake tudor with and without date....

Personally I love the feel of a modern piece.....

I am a just fan of the sapphire crystal....

There are threads running including a lot of the watches you mention having owned.
Especially Steves and Snowflakes

I prefer acrylic crystals

I liked new, but that was 20 years ago, so now vintage for me(new becomes vintage, just wait for it).

The forum deals with both modern and vintage, and with the number of threads and posts you will find that your choice is definitely not limited to one or the other.

I like both modern and vintage, each have their virtures and their vices.

I don't particularly like the sapphire crystal as it does reflect quite a lot and appears to cast a haze on the dial quite often.

Vintage don't tend to have good or functional lume on the dial and hands and that can be a downside. Spare parts and servicing can be a big and annoying issue at times.

I love both

I love both vintage and modern as long as they are Daytona's . The older have more character but the new ones are functionally more robust.

As you can see the forum caters for a variety of collectors. Hence I find it a great source of knowledge and fun.

Enjoy

vintage all the way!!
you have to love the soft warm glow of an acrylic crystal on an iridescent dial...
but modern has their appeal as well.

While they share similarities vintage speaks to a golden age the likes of which we will never see again. Much of the aura and heritage of all that is Rolex was a result of the great pieces of yesteryear and the men that wore them.

Modern pieces point the way Rolex perceives itself now and in the future.

Both have their champions. Of the two vintage will always hold a special place for me. When I started--they were modern.

Mike stole me line, but here goes. I was modern before I was vintage. Or as that old country song said "I was country before country was cool".

Careful....you'll find yourself wanting to sell off all your modern pieces to fund your vintage appetite! I started modern, but I love vintage pieces and I am focusing more on that!

Same here, I love the look of vintage, and the history of Rolex's success is right there in those watches.

I prefer modern for daily wear. Tritium with no glow? Acrylic that scratches? No thanks.

I do want a birth year watch, but purely for the fact of owning a watch as old as me. Anyone know where I can buy a decent sundial with box & papers?

Vintage and modern both have their following. For me the lure is hunting down a rare vintage piece and resurrecting it. I currently have this one out to one of the premiere watchmakers for a complete makeover. Movement restoration, case work, new hands, etc, etc. It's a 1908 Wilsdorf & Davis pendant watch, hallmarked to the same year that Wilsdorf registered the name "Rolex". Estimated completion date is mid to late March, '09, after which Nancy will have it to wear on a chain or pin. The watchmaker has said that he'll take pix along the way, I'll post them when its done.

There's just something about the acrylic crystal and the dial.

I bought my watch new but I admit I drool over photos of vintage watches (especially the dress watches) every time someone posts them.

I received a vintage (1940s) Movado sports watch for my birthday recently. We just had it cleaned but didn't touch the dial (it had sat without a crystal for decades) or hands. I love the way the watch looks, and was surprised to see that the lume on the hands actually still works. Vintage Rolexes are even more amazing.
