Been offered a 16800

Hi all, I have been offered a Rolex 16800 from 1981 . Unfortunately this is the only picture I have of the watch until Monday . I really haven't got much experience with this reference or exactly what to look for .So can anyone point me in the right direction in what I should be on the lookout for on the watch that may be wrong . Again apologies for the poor picture , and any feedback greatly appreciated good or bad . The seller wants £6k for the watch , and there are no papers with it .

I asked the seller for a better quality picture of the dial as the other picture sent was such poor quality & this is the best of a bad bunch . So I'm off to see the watch in person tomorrow, & will be posting much better quality ones . But in the meantime, is there anything that jumps out of the picture below that looks wrong .Again any comments appreciated .

Personally think you can do better, the box really has no value and thats not a very impressive example. Keep searching, you'll find the right one in due time.

Finally a better quality picture ,for some reason I can't upload any more pictures. The serial number of the watch begins with 72 & the letter stamp on the clasp is G , so I think it's a 1982 watch .Apologies again for the lack of pictures & I know it's not a lot to go on but any thoughts appreciated.

From the pic, the insert looks a little banged up. You could use that to negotiate a little and source another later. I like it but you’ll need to hold it in your hand. Good luck

Finally got to see the watch in the flesh , & there is a little movement on the price due to the insert . It actually looks blueish in daylight . And some more pictures , but really don't know why I can't post multiple pictures so here we go again. Does the dial look like a mk1 or later mk , I think it could be mk11 but not expert enough to be certain.

It seems a little bit... tired! Case too polished, scratchy insert, bracelet needs a restoration.

What do I like? The dial is in very good condition and the blue of the insert... but as I just wrote it is too scratchy.

I'd pass over...

A little bit of a project for you if you buy it, unless you want to wear it as is.

"The seller wants £6k for the watch , and there are no papers with it."

I'd make a reasonable offer taking into consideration the things you may want to do to get the watch up to your specifications... IMHO; basic service, source a bezel, possible have band tightened (if needed) and without papers it's worth a little less too.

I’m actually a little surprised at the negativity, it’s a 36 year old Watch! Is it really ‘that’ bad the case is scratched?

The dial and hands are very pleasing to me, the insert is probably a bit too beaten for my liking but not a deal breaker. Sure you could get the correct bezel in better condition and sell that one and not be too out of pocket.

As the owner of a 16800 I would say from what I can see there is plenty of meat on the case. Bracelet can be restored. Not keen on the hands and dial lumes, but that's just personal preference. £6k seems a bit steep. Take the price of a good one and count back by what you need to spend on this one and then you will have it's approximate worth

Thanks for all the comments guys , a little bit divided on opinions but that's to be expected & understood , after all I asked for feedback. But can someone clarify the point on the insert , I know the insert isn't the best & can always be replaced . But a couple of comments mention replacing the bezel , so is the bezel wrong or is it just the insert is a bit over scratched .

I like the dial though and the case looks ok to me.

Curious, are the hands resumed? They look a little different. I am not an expert.

I have asked about any re lumeing of the hands ,& was told the watch is all original with no additional work carried out .

I'd never spend 6k on that watch but that's just me.

After some negotiations over the final price ,the deal has been done . And I couldn't be happier now it's finally mine . It will now join my other watches & be worn in rotation ,as I don't buy any watch I'm afraid to wear .And thanks to everyone who posted comments about the watch .
