Incoming GMT

Hey guys.

So I went through a couple different GMTs before solidifying my decision on this one. First was a 91 16710 Coke bezel with patina plots but non matching hands. Second was a beautiful 16710 with full kit except warranty papers. And then this one came up.

I’ve always been a massive 4 digit fan but with the prices as they are I’ve always thought they were out of reach. A bit of flipping got me my 5513 a few weeks ago. And I ended up trading my Pepsi 16710 for this 1675

It was valued at 10kUSD everything said and done in the trade. It’s a 1.4mill serial so it dates it 1966. Nice red back insert and period correct jubilee. The dial at one point was replaced during service which the gentleman I bought it from took into account with his price. I still thought the watch was beautiful and it was a good price to get into a nice example of a 1675.

Figured I’d share! Hoping I made the right choice on the trade for this one!

Many people would say you are going the wrong way buying older and less reliable watches with flimsy bracelets. Personally......I get it. A person doesn’t understand until they try a Rolex with a plexiglass crystal. Nothing beats it IMHO. A HUGE congrats on the new pick-up. It’s beautiful.

For some reason I feel like us 4 digit fans may have the last laugh in the long wrong when these pieces become more scarce and the 5 digits are still quite plentiful. Figured I’d still get one while I had the means and opportunity.

It’s an interesting path you’ve walked. I’ve gone through something similar recently, but ended up in a slightly different place. I started looking at the 1675, and the more I looked, the more I was taken with the hour markers, plexiglass, and open numbers. It’s just a wonderful, wonderful watch. However, I actually use GMT functions as I travel quite a bit. I really wasn’t too keen on the second time zone coming from a simple turn of the bezel. It’s simple. It’s effective. But any knock or accidental twist of the bezel and you’re buggered. I prefer the Master II functionality, and started looking at the 16760. However, I like the Pepsi bezel. That means a 16710. In two weeks, I pick up my full set 1988 16710. It’s also in mint condition. I wish it had open numbers and the 1675 hour markers. However, it’s all about compromise in what one wants.

I definitely agree with you on this fact. I also would rather have the quickest hour hand vs the rotating to set the time zone. however, I do still have and plan to keep my birth year 16570 explorer II once it’s back from service. And this will be my travel / beater watch whilst the 1675 and 5513 are rotated on weekends and casual outings!

Nice work Andrew. I agree. I'd love to have a birth year 1675 in mint condition. However, at the cost of these watches, it'll be my JLC Reverso from the year I met my wife and my 16710 which is also connected to significant year events (not birth year!). That'll be my lot.
