Do I buy a Panerai or a Rolex??!
Hi people,
I wanna treat myself to a new watch and it's a toss-up between either a Panerai or a Rolex. So Rolex fans, give me 3 reasons why I should choose a Rolex over a Panerai! I'm thinking of getting either a Panerai Luminor Marina, like this one: http://www.globalwatchmarket.com/Wat...i/43170.aspx?1 Or a Rolex Daytona, maybe this one: http://www.watches.co.uk/watch.php?wid=0900P Rob. |

It's nice if you have a choice...
I thought it might be difficult to find a Daytona in the UK, and it will be twice the price of the Panerai.. Tough choice as those are two extremes...

Welcome!
I own both, and find myself wearing Rolex far more often. Others will report the opposite. Another option is choose a less expensive Rolex--GMT II or IIc, Submariner, Explorer II, etc--and get both.
Best of luck!

Rolex.
1) timeless 2) rugged 3) beautiful PAM 1) looks like a toy 2) fad 3) cant be bothered to think of a third reason Which 3 do you like the best? I know where my allegiance falls. especially when stacked against a Daytona! In all honesty, if someone gave me a PAM, i would flip it emediatly, and get another Rolex, but you are one a Rolex forum, what did you expect to hear? hahah Beecher

I would go for Rolex. I feel like Panerai is stealing(luckily) what Rolex meant for many years : new money, ostentation, bad taste.
Today a Rolex Submariner is a good, realiable watch at a relatively good price. |

I'd also save about £600-£800 by not using watches.co.uk :)

I will choose Rolex. However there is a significant price difference between these two models you have linked. If money was no issue I would have gone for the Daytona, if money was an issue I would still go for the Daytona HAHA!!
I cant stand Pam. Sorry. The last thing I want to have on my wrist is a italian watch. 3 reasons. Panerai is the last on my list. I prefer casio to be honest. However I do not mind flipping Pams for my finacial benifits :-D Rolex: Most recognized brand in the world Durable and reliable watches Substantial reselling value Panerai Made in Italy? :-D hehe!! The all look alike Wachtes worn by Italian navy who lost the war.

I would say go try them on. One of the watches will "sing" to you. I recently went through the same decision process and got this same advise from JJ I believe. I went to the store and tried on a Daytona, a Pam 250, a GMT IIc, and a YachtMaster. The Daytona is the watch that I kept putting back on my wrist, so thats what I bought. Good luck, both a nice looking watches.

The one thing Panerai has going for it is that it makes a smaller quantity of watches than Rolex.
However, Panerai's annual output is still larger than its total output up to the date it was bought by Richemont, so as far as I'm concerned Panerai comes with a pretty thin horological history, especially since it doesn't make its own movements (for eight grand, you get a modified ETA). Also, while I think you can get away with wearing a Rolex with a suit, you're pushing it with something like a Panerai. |

Of the two I'd pick the Daytona though I would wait to see if one was available closer to the £6k mark.
They do come up, even in the UK.

I love both brands. And given the choice you suggest, I'll take the Daytona every time - have one sitting on my wrist as I write. But do want to correct one thing - Panerai DO make their own movements - and are NOT made in Italy (whether that's a good thing or not is between you and your maker!). Ask me to choose between a Daytona and a PAM 270, then that would be a tougher choice!
Either way, good luck. Either brand will give you years of joy - and pick the one that sings to you most. All the best! |

Rolex, would be a wise choice. Why?
(Tongue in cheek) 1. Your neighbors will like it. 2. Your co-workers will hate you for it. 3. With Rolex, you will be the talk of the town. Seriously, if it were my money, I will buy what my heart desires... Cheers. |

Correct. They even released a tourbillon model last year, and the watches are made in Switzerland.
A more appropriate price-to-price comparison might be the Daytona with the PAM 233, which has an in-house, 8-day movement with 2nd time zone. That said, the base models are very nice, and if you ache to have both, then buy a Rolex in the $5-6K range, which if you go pre-owned affords you nearly all of the SS Rolex sport models. Best of luck in your choice!

On holding their value, Rolex holds up more. Good luck on your decision.

I am in the same boat with you. Trying to decide between a PAM 88 or 90 and a Rolex 116713.

To be honest the two watches you list are miles apart, the Panerai is a basic model and the Rolex is a Daytona, you could get the PAM005 for around 3k new in the UK, leaving you nearly 4k to buy a second watch!
So a simpler choice would be, do i want two watches or do i want a Daytona, for the money you could get that Panerai and a brand new Rolex Submariner/SD, just a little extra will get you a GMT IIC with the PAM.

Daytona all the way.
You'll get tired of the Panerai & once you do, no amount of strap changing will help. Only make you more frustrated as you scratch it swapping straps & spending more money on more expensive straps that will store bacteria from your sweat.

Since I have no idea what is important to you, I'll only suggest you read the Panny board here as well as others and the Rolex section of this site (no need to read any others) and decide what you want to own. You might even learn what is a true "apples to apples" comparsion would be. Both brands are excellent and many people here own both.

I HAVE BOTH. I THINK BY GOING WITH PANERAI AND A SUB YOU WILL HAVE BOTH FOR THE PRICE OF ONE DAYTONA.
