Icon20 Cycling down cobbles

Hi everyone, this may be a daft question but I’ve just been cycling down a load of cobbles quickly and wondered if the severe wrist shaking could damage my 114060? I’m probably being paranoid and I don’t baby my watch, but it’s like holding a pneumatic drill. Should I leave the sub at home?

Maybe pick up a 1950s Tudor for those rugged rides

No issue imho. That is however an opinion. If you're going to be riding a lot of roads like that a lot then you might consider a mountain bike with shocks.

Hey guys, I was on a flight last week and we hit some turbulence. Should I send it in for servicing?

I didn’t see any Rolexes on rider’s wrists during the racing at the Spring Classics. If you’re riding to work or the store or pub on a cruiser you’re fine. If you’re hammering cobbles on a training ride or racing over them with an expensive watch well it’s time someone told you you have more money than brains.

I doubt the bouncing will hurt your Rolex watch. I think the main exposure would be taking a fall and bouncing your watch off the cobbles. If you were wearing a Patek, I'd change my opinion, but Rolex builds tough watches.

I was on a large training ride a couple of months ago that involved a crash. A former teammate of mine went down and the asphalt nearly ground off the entire bezel of his Garmin Fenix. Granted, it's not a Rolex, but it was $700 worth of paperweight at that point. Had that been a Rolex, no RSC in the world could have done anything with it. On the bike, leave it at home.

Not at all daft, I wondered the exact same thing the other day, so thanks for saving me the hassle of asking and taking the brute of all the sarcastic replies. Thanks to old expat beast for the article.

He was a superb rider in his day (take a look at his palmares). Having said that, the guys at Velominati say:

"If there was an upside to the EPO era, it meant that a number of riders who had immaculate style may never have risen to the top of the fish bowl if it weren’t for EPO. Allegedly. Michele Bartoli was a prime example of a rider who was so doped up that he had plenty of bandwidth left for a complete and total commitment to Looking Fantastic at All Times. Allegedly. Let’s face facts (allegedly): the Mapei kit would have been lining the rubbish bin if it weren’t for riders like Bartoli and Frank Vandenbroucke. And Michele pioneered the mini-frame with long, slammed stem and a meter of seatpin."

Only an issue if you fall off.

Context. Read for context. Now show us a picture of him wearing the Daytona during a race over cobbles. And even if you find one it just shows he also has more money than brains. Plenty of pros wear a Rolex. Tough to find one who wears one to every race.

I did it for a living and would not recommend it. It’s not the jarring, it’s the fall that sometimes follows it! Be safe.

Yes, an excellent idea. I wasn't suggesting anything about him wearing a watch while riding. Was just a whimsical cobbles/Rolex photo!

Fair enough. But when a picture like that is posted after what I wrote it’s more than reasonable to assume it’s being posted as a counter-point to my post. Especially since I was being quoted.

Cancellara wore IWCs for his races, maybe he gets it serviced for free after the race though ;)

I wear my watches in long distance runs up to 7,5hrs, and longer runs to come, never had an issue.
Your watch has anti-shock protection and is pretty durable

Well this just wasn’t true. You can maybe find some photos of him wearing a watch during races I’m sure but you’ll find many many more when he isn’t. I’m a Cancellara fan. I miss his graceful conduct in this era of butt pinching crying Sagan. It's interesting we’re having this discussion with Tag back as a sponsor. You didn’t see many Tags on BMC riders’s wrists as they stormed through the Northern Classics. There’s a time and a place for everything. As a former high level racer I can state that based on my experience there’s no way a personally funded Rolex is going on my wrist while riding hard over cobbles. I still travel annually to climb in the Alps and Dolomites for a couple of weeks nearly every autumn. The GMT remains safely locked away as I bomb down the classic climbs at fifty to sixty miles an hour.
