Looking for a dressy, versatile Rolex and need suggestions

Hello everyone,

My current watch is a Panerai 44mm Luminor Marina Militare with a limited edition cocoa leather strap, and I love the watch, but I would like to get back into a Rolex as well. I would like something versatile that I could wear with a suit, but could also be dressed down on weekends.

My personal style: fairly sporty, but I dress well much of the time. I have an athletic build (I am a climber, so not a big guy, and no, these don't go anywhere near a rock wall or indoor gym wall). My wife has a GMTII 2-tone and a DJ36 fluted in RG, and she is not impressed with the Panerai.

I used to own a GMTII, which I traded for the Panerai, as I wanted something a bit different.

Current thoughts are:
Explorer II (5 digit style, can be had around $5,000)
Yacht-Master with blue dial (different, but sharp)
DJ 41 with a blue arabic dial and fluted bezel (perhaps more dressy, but a nice watch)
older Daytona
Pepsi-bezel 5-digit GMT
Milgauss with green face

Which would you choose, and why? Which is most likely to hold value over time?

I'm with the 116520 white dial too..
Welcome back!

Out of your choices, the Daytona is the dressiest watch with the best "value retention." I'd just buy a new/old explorer I and call it a day.

EDIT: Datejust is dressier.....no go on value retention I'm afraid though.

The only one you can wear with a suit is the DJ. Awesome watch, very versatile

If you’re lokking for a dressy watch, the Datejust is most likely a perfect model for you. So many different dials to chose from. If you go for the Oyster bracelet it automatically gets a little more sporty, but still a nice dressy watch. Or go all in with the jubilee!

looking at the topic, the only watch that came to my mind was the sub 114060.

Dressy and versatile = DJ, they've been hitting that fashion sweet spot for 70 years by being dressy and versatile, and why it's Rolex's all-time best-selling design.

None of the rest are dressy (or the one you didn't list but people keep saying anyway...sub). Milgauss is sorta dressy because of no numbered and/or rotating bezel like the other non-DJs.

DJ 41 is perfect!
Not sure if Arabics can be had with blue dial in SS though.
YM with blue dial is super cool also but has bigger bezel and smaller dial than DJ41.
try them on if you can find them.

I’ll go with a blue dial DJ41 dressy and sporty at the same time because of its dual color. Make sure it’s jubilee, they’re really nice.
Cheers and good hunting.
Btw, my daily wearer is the 114060 no date sub (I wear a suit for work).

16710BLRO or SD43(if you have wrist for it). Great watches that will likely hold value well.

Yeah, the DJ41 doesn't have arabic dials (yet). You could get a 116334 with arabic though, at a good discount

Pound for pound, I would go white dial ceramic daytona or SD 16600, the classic version. They can both go dressy or sporty weekend look great.

I think I’d go DJ41 if you want a dressy sports watch from Rolex.

Who cares what your wife thinks about your Panerai

I would go with the Daytona or Datejust. I wear either one if I need to go from formal to casual.

DateJust 41. The most versatile watch I have ever owned. Looks great with a suit or with jeans.

The 116234 on a jubilee. Looks the part with a suit and for me can be worn with nearly any outfit (Well, I do lol). However it is all about personal preference some will be comfortable wearing a SS sports watch with a suit and others won’t.
